Hugh Phillips is definitely the MOST sarcastic man I have ever encountered. Some may feel intimidated by him, but he is a good instructor who knows his material and crafts the course for the freshman level. He gives out extra credit quizzes on a whim. Hugh is a Russian history expert, so prepare to learn a lot about Russia (and he lets you know that up front). There is no required reading although he suggests using Spielvogel's Western Civilization textbook to supplement the lectures. All in all, he has my recommendation.
