First of all, I'm going to start off by saying that Dr. Lash definately knows his stuff, and outside of class it's endlessly fascinating to discuss films with him. And while he is generally a really cool guy outside of the classroom, he should not be teaching this class.
Basically, the class involves sitting in a lecture for the first week or so (and since it's only once a week, its a long, painful lecture) until he splits the class up into groups. From then on, each group is responsible for preparing a presentation on a specific chapter in the book, and choosing a film to accompany their presentation. Lash chimes in occasionally, but by and large, the class is taught by the students taking it. This is a BAD thing, since not everyone is good at public speaking, and therefore some of the presentations were beyond incomprehensible. You can get the same information by simply reading the book and showing up to take the tests. There are a few questions specifically related to the films on the tests, but they don't really hurt that much if you miss them. I managed to pull a C in this class with almost no effort at all.
The next time the class is offered, it would benefit everyone greatly if he were to ditch the group presentations and take a more active role (read: actually take an active role in the first place) in teaching the course. This class has the potential to be one of the easiest, most enjoyable classes offered by WKU, yet it's mired by ineffective instruction.
