Additional Comments
Prior to taking this class, I dreaded it. I have heard mixed reviews about 498. Some people really like it; some hate it. I am one of those who enjoyed it...but I believe it was because of the professor. I highly recommend Dr. Droege. Even though he is a bit eccentric, he keeps you laughing and makes the class enjoyable. You actually feel like you're learning something and the simulation reinforces what you have learned in other business classes. Dr. Droege tells LOTS of stories and attempts to bring them back to what he is teaching (doesn't always work). Being a summer class, it was very fast-paced. We studied six chapters and had a test over each (each test was worth 10% of our final grade). These tests were MC and T/F. He gave us the essay ahead of time and we could prepare it at home and bring it to class to turn in with the test. The book is not neccessary, though helpful. He provides PowerPoint slides on Blackboard. There is no final (at least in the summer session). We had a business simulation where we ran a manufacturing company producing sensors. There are eight rounds and the team with the highest point total at the end receives a 100%. Each other team's points are divided by the winner's total points. He offers a couple of "safety nets" in case you don't do well on the simulation. It is important to meet together as a group and work on this simulation!!! It is important to spend time working with it to figure out your strategy from the beginning! The simulation is worth 15% of the final grade and there is a test over the simulation worth 10% of your grade. We also had to present an innovation project worth 15% of the final grade. We were allowed to do this in groups. The class grades this project by allocating "venture capital" to the teams they think presented the best innovations. Each team has $1 million to allocate. The team with the most capital wins and gets a 100%. Each other team's capital is divided by the winning team's capital amount to determine their grade. I enjoyed the class. I'm glad I took it during the summer because I think it would be a lot of work during the spring or fall semester. I would take Droege though because he is the easiest professor when it comes to MGT 498 (according to what I've heard about others that teach it). His tests are relatively easy and he's willing to throw out bad questions. In fact, our simulation exam was an oral, class effort. As long as one person gave the right answer within one minute, the whole class got credit for that question. Needless to say, we all got a 100% on the simulation exam!!!
