she gives notes from a powerpoint the whole time, but is very conversational. just go to class, copy the notes, look them over, take the test. it's easy. she even tells you the essay question.
besides, what other choice do you have?

I could have easily got an A in this class but I didn't really put forth the effort. She gives you LOTS of opportunities to get extra credit, so as long as you show up and take good notes from the slides, you'll know it. The tests are about 70 multiple choice questions and an essay. She doesn't average your grades. Each test and assignment is worth a certain percentage of your final grade (i.e. the final was 10%). It's a fun class because you're always talking about what's going on in the world. Study for the tests and you'll do great. Written with Miller Lite in hand.

Mrs. Lumsden is a great teacher. She recently came out with a book called Inez. There is no textbook, but three books you must order on your own or get from Barnes and Noble; they are not offered in the bookstore. You must also get a supplement reader from Staples or where ever she places it. There are about 10 essays you will write over the course about readings and the books. She gives "pop" quizzes, but always tells you about them. You are able to drop one assignment, so if you get a low grade or decide not to do one, that is covered. I would have had a B, but I missed a quiz and hadn't done another assignment. Make sure you go on quiz days. She usually does not take any late work, no matter if you were sick or in the hospital or anything. If you are not a bcom or journalism major, then you might get tired of the class after a while. It is all about women in the journalism field. There are no notes, and the final was a presentation over one woman in the journalism field- a power point presentation.

She talks the entire period and promises to let you out early, but doesn't. Rambles on and on, makes you watch pointless videos she'll know you'll fall asleep on. Tests are killa and cover about 2-3 chapters each! NOT recommended....

There is a ton of extra credit available in this class, so there is absolutely no excuse not to get an 'A'. There are quite a few notes, and it can get really old copying a powerpoint for an hour and a half straight, and it doesn't help that she skips ahead before everyone's finished with one slide, but the material is really interesting.

To get an A, you should attend class and take notes. The notes are powerpoint, but there are a lot of them. If you study the notes and read the assigned pages (around 10 per test), then it is easy to get a good grade. Also, make sure you turn in the short essays- those points add up. There are many chances for multiple choice. Prof. Lumsden is kind of... different, but if you do the work, the class is easy, but kind of boring.

TONS of notes! It's straight lecture everyday. But ya learn alot! Ya gotta be big into journalism to like this class. She gives frequent tests, papers, and extra credit. It's not too bad if you get all the work done. And I'm pretty sure she's the only one that offers this class and I think everyone in the school of journalism has to take it. Good news is, you won't die! Good luck!

I found the class really boring. It's a huge class since everyone in journalism and photojournalism has to take it. I did learn some interesting trivia about media over the years. There is a book review, but you get to choose the book, and she encourages you to pick one on an aspect of media that interests you. It's not a hard class, and attendance is not required. She had one in-class group assignment one day. She's really nice.

This class was the reason I decided to become a Journalism major. It is required for all Journalism majors but it is an easy course. If you just show up and copy the notes or at least listen then it is hard to get below a B on the tests. She provides extra credit opportunities with no limit as to how many points you can get. All you have to do is go to a specificed event and write a 1 page summary on it. Easy and fun class.

Everyone else I know who took this class got a B or worse in it, which I really don't understand because it's an easy A. The tests are moderately difficult. To study for them, all you really need to do is skim over the chapters (usually two chapters per test) and read your notes.
You'll take a lot of notes off the powerpoint, and the class often gets unbearably boring, mainly just because there is so much information being presented. A lot of it is common knowledge, however, so it's not that big of a deal. At the same time, however, a lot of the information IS new, and there is a fair share of names to memorize. Basically, it's like an easy history class.
Oh, and each test has an essay question, but she tells you ahead of time what the subject is going to be. So there's no excuse whatsoever to leave the essay blank, which a lot of people did--an automatic 10 points taken off of your test score right there. Dumb move. Be prepared and it's really simple.

I have to say I love a class where I have plenty of opportunities for extra credit and know a lot of stuff about the subject beforehand. So when I took the test on music recording, I knew that this was the class. Ms. Lumsden is a very good teacher, who tries to work one on one with the students as best as possible, considering it is usually a class of 70. Yet that number dwindles because attendance is not mandatory. The test are not too hard, and you'll discover you probably know what she wants you to know before she asks you on the test. She will have movie clips and sound clips for added interest, plus there will a speaker or two maybe that will talk to the class. Extra credit for many of the campus activities and also you don't have to take the final if you have an A going into it. You don't even have to read, although it helps. My highest recommendations go with this class.

Ms. Lumsden is a pretty good teacher. She makes what could be very boring seem interesting. She grades papers (which there are about 1 assigned a week) very easy. Just do it and you get the points. And don't let the 2 points per fool you...they really help your grade. And do the extra credit...you get a PERCENTAGE point added to your final grade for each one. Do 10 of them and you can get an 80% in the class and still get an A. A definite must teacher for this class.

Dr. Lumsden was a great teacher! She allowed a great load of extra credit and she used power point during all of her classes. Using power point helped a lot. And what she put on power point was exactly on the test. So, make sure you take good notes. There is homework due almost every week but, it is simple. Take her class, she is good!

First of all, this is a huge class because it's required of all PR, journalism, broadcasting, advertising, etc. majors. You copy endless powerpoint presentations down as your notes. Actually, you hardly ever use the book. Tests come off the powerpoint mainly. There's only a few small articles in the book that she asks you to read at the end of a chapter, and then she asks a basic question on each. You have to write eight 25-line essays about various artcles and stuff......just write 25 lines ;-) Also, there is a LOT of extra credit offered for going to certain campus events and doing a short write up on it. Seriously, it can bring your grade up an entire letter if you go to a bunch of them (there's no limit). Plus, it can save you if you bomb a test...and some of them are easily bombable. The final is sweet though because it is only on one chapter. In my class it was "Libel and Ethics" and that by far was the easiest in my opinion. So, that final can help you out a lot too--and it only takes like 15 mins ;-)

This beast of a woman needs to get her crippled behind to the "school for teachers that can't teach well." I fell asleep everyday and eventually said, "forget it! I might as well stay home and sleep in the bed." This class is boring unless you consider copying notes off a power point for a straight hour and 15 minutes a good time.

This class can be very easy if you put forth an effort. If you show up to class, do the homework and study a little before the tests, you will make an A. Dr. Lumsden makes what could be boring subject material interesting by using up-to-date information, pictures and video clips. She is pretty laid-back and willing to help, and on the whole, I enjoyed this class.

Dr. Lumsden really knows her stuff and is so qualified. Her lectures are interesting and up-to-date with what's currently going on in the media. Sometimes the lectures get boring, but more often than not, they'll keep your attention. I highly recommend attending class, and her tests aren't hard if you study the night before. Don't miss more than one homework, and participate as often as possible. She's a terrific teacher.

This is an exceptionally large class and it is held in the Garret Auditorium - there were at least 125 people in my class.
This class isn't easy, but Dr. Lumsden doesn't leave the material covered a mystery. She posts all of the homework on the web and 11 of our 12 assignments were activities done on the web. She keeps up with your grade on the atech site, so it is easy to track.
She tells you in the beginning what chapters will be covered when and what tests will cover. She never takes attendence OR late homework. Homework is worth one point a piece but it is a large part of the grade. She will also tell you about extra credit opportunities that can really effect your grade - they are all guest speakers, movies to watch or meetings to attend - things they will take an hour or less and you type a page about it. Homework is ALWAYS one typed double spaced page and it is graded by a graduate student - I completed each assignment in less than 20 minutes.
Tests were difficult but not impossible. It is good to use the book website, you can do multiple choice and true false questions. I always did the questions and asked for help with the answers - the site will tell you what pages to read for certain questions and I would highlight those sections. You can also generate a list of 'media people' from the site - those will always turn up at the end of the test in matching format.
I would reccommend this class because it is about the world today - we talked about Survivor and the election and all sorts of topics straight from the news.
I marked 'no' for the mandatory final - this is true if you have an A in the class you don't have to take the final. She read off 5 names in my large class and they were all people who sat in the front, so get a good seat. It also helps if you introduce yourself so she can put a name with a face.

She doesn't really understand what she is talking about. It will not be too hard to get a decent grade if you can stay awake or force yourself to go. The homework is a lot of your grade and even though it is only one point a piece it will add up. It is easy stuff that won't take long to do. However, the tests are not really easy so you will need to pay attention. I thought the class was very boring but it shouldn't be too hard to get a decent grade.

There are six tests (including the final, which is not comprehensive), one 3-4 page book critique, weekly homework (which is very easy), and extra credit opportunities. Dr. Lumsden does a good job of making the boring subject material more interesting with video clips and slides. Study tips for her tests: I found that her notes were not good to study from, but they were useful for knowing what to study. Learn all the terms in the margins of the chapters. Get on the web site of the textbook and take the multiple choice and true/false quizes of the chapters before a test

This class is rated as Good because you learn quite a bit from it, not neccessarily because it's a totally enjoyable experience. You really have to work and do your research to earn a good grade. You'll write every week and usually have at least two hwork assignments per week. Dr. Lumsden will help you any way she can, but some of the assignments, especially the final project, require quite a bit of outside time. If you're not a very good writer, practice beforehand because you're also graded on your writing ability. You have to work here, but you'll learn quite a bit.
