Additional Comments |
Stay away, stay FAR away.
Actually, Dr. Carey doesn't seem to be a bad teacher, and the subject matter of this course isn't bad either. They don't mix, though. This is the first time the course has been offered in a while, and this is Dr. Carey's first time teaching it. It shows.
You go to class. She works some long, complicated problem on the board. You copy it down. Someone spots an error in it somewhere, so you erase most of it and re-do the problem. That's the class. The actual content of the course consists of calculus and algebra that is relevant to economics.
The tests? Ha ha ha! They take forever and are brutal. There's homework, which she collects, that can lessen some of the damage. And we met on MW -- Fridays were optional sessions in which she answered questions and helped you get caught up if you needed it. That was very helpful and provided a nice little change of pace from the usual rigors of class.
I don't think she's a bad teacher, but she simply wasn't right for this course, espcially having not taught it in the past. I think that someone from the math department would make a much better teacher because they're accustomed to teaching this type of stuff, and Dr. Carey isn't.
