This class is a joke. I dreaded it. Have fun with those STUPID proposals. Lash just mumbles on about nothing and who he has met and what he has done.

First of all, I'm going to start off by saying that Dr. Lash definately knows his stuff, and outside of class it's endlessly fascinating to discuss films with him. And while he is generally a really cool guy outside of the classroom, he should not be teaching this class.
Basically, the class involves sitting in a lecture for the first week or so (and since it's only once a week, its a long, painful lecture) until he splits the class up into groups. From then on, each group is responsible for preparing a presentation on a specific chapter in the book, and choosing a film to accompany their presentation. Lash chimes in occasionally, but by and large, the class is taught by the students taking it. This is a BAD thing, since not everyone is good at public speaking, and therefore some of the presentations were beyond incomprehensible. You can get the same information by simply reading the book and showing up to take the tests. There are a few questions specifically related to the films on the tests, but they don't really hurt that much if you miss them. I managed to pull a C in this class with almost no effort at all.
The next time the class is offered, it would benefit everyone greatly if he were to ditch the group presentations and take a more active role (read: actually take an active role in the first place) in teaching the course. This class has the potential to be one of the easiest, most enjoyable classes offered by WKU, yet it's mired by ineffective instruction.

Look, Cory out of class is a great guy. However, he is probably one of the worst TEACHERS at WKU. He is defiinitely the worst BCOM teacher. He will keep until the very last minute of class just for the hell of it. He will waste so many hours of your life. If you have him more than once, you will see the same videos over and over again. I'm not saying he doesn't know his stuff, because he really does, he just can't teach to save his life. Classes are boring, tests are ridiculous and you really can't prepare for them. You will have to take him at some point so just prepare yourself. Bring a pillow.

I thought I had done a lot worse in this course. But apparently he grades on a curve. I bombed all the tests, probably because I didn't get the book, but secondly because you can't distinguish what it note worthy in the class. The class itself is for two hours for two days a week. So basically you're taking a 4 hour class but only getting 3 hours credit which sucks considering all the out of class projects you have to do. Supposedly attendance is mandatory but at some point I ended up not going because I was bored out of my mind. Good luck though, it's required!

Cory knows his stuff, but he should not be teaching. I believe the course has potential to be interesting, you wouldn't know it from attending class when Cory teaches it. Often the entire class is confused because of his failure to explain clearly. So future TV students who must take him for the course, take notes, and talk to someone who has taken the class. You may have a test sometime during the semester, you may not. You may get your assignments back on time and you may get them at the end of the semester. It's all a surprise in his class!

the only reason this class is difficult is because hes test suck. they are really hard. he sucks as a teacher also. i think we covered how to use a camera in two hours but he taught the same stuff in the next 4 class meetings. its a 3 hour class with a lab. well the lab meets maybe twice. so you are getting screwed out of hours. he sucks as a teacher. all he talks about is what he is doing and how he is doing it. he likes to tell stories of what he uses for lighting also. no one gives a flying rats ass. well good luck when you take him...hes the only teacher that teaches that class.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The only students that are required to take this class are Film Studies Minors. The Film Studies Minor is only 2 years old and I doubt too many students need this class. I simply took it because it counts as an elective in Television Production. You think it sounds fun going into the class the first day but think otherwise. Last semester (Spring 2003) it lasted from 2:30 to 6:50 PM on Mondays and you stay every minute of it. The lab is simply watching a movie, but the films he chose did not appeal to hardly anyone in the class and were very difficult to understand for an average movie watcher. You must stay for the films because at the end of class Dr. Lash usually assigns an assignment over the film due the next week. Also the exams are nearly impossible to get an A or a B. You have to read the book bit by bit to even get a C on an exam. His lectures are meaningless and you spend most of the time before the film talking about what movies the class saw the previous weekend. Of course, I never volunteered because some people have to work on the weekends. About half of the class were extreme film geeks. They knew every line to a film that had ever been made and I am sure they got noticed by Dr. Lash. The only reason I made a B was because the Paper counts 25% and the short assignments over the movies and attendance counts 10% which is 35% of your grade. The 3 exams are worth 15% each and the final which is questions over previous exams counts 20%. This class is only offered every 2 years in the Spring, so I suppose that means it will not be offered again until the Spring of 2005. This class will not benefit anyone in any form in your future unless you plan on replacing Joel Siegel or Roger Ebert when they retire.

You need to really have a passion for movies to enjoy this class! Not just a casual movie goer, but hardcore! The only difficulty about this class are the exams and the movies you have to watch. The exams are right from the book, so as long as you read every word of every chapter, you'll be fine. Otherwise, you might have trouble. I had to draw from my own knowledge of cinema to pass most of the exams. His lectures don't really help that much; he pretty much goes by the book or has you do presentations for various chapters. The movies can be kind of boring at times, especially after having sat through about an hour and a half of lecture beforehand. But you do come out of the class with a greater appreciation and better knowledge of film.

Lash knows film. He actively works professionally in film production and brings the real world into the classroom. Great course if you want to learn filmmaking!
