Mr. Anderson (his name is NOT Neo, hahaha matrix joke). Okay, just kidding. He is a great teacher, spends the first 15 mins of class telling his personal story. Marched with Dr.King too! There are no tests except his final. You spend the first couple of weeks watching movies and writing papers on them... After the movies are watched, you crack the books and write papers on the material. There is a final, it's only a couple of questions, so do good! No notes aren't taken, but you do get in groups and fill out questions together. He gives candy for participation during class too! Great teacher, great class, easy "A".

I was looking forward to this class when I first chose it. But we really dont dicuss social ethics.Really, if you dont like dry statistics about housing districts, and economic stats DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He gives you tons of research to read and doesnt really explain any of it. He does not tell you your grade and he takes days to prepare it. You have to wirte 7 reading papers, 2 feedback papers,5 reading tests, a midterm and the final. His tests are short answer/essay/definition only and on your readin papers if you have a different interpretation of the thesis then you are automatically bumped down to an 80.
This is supposed to be a 300 level GEN-ED. This is far more difficult than anticipated and not worth messing up a good GPA

Dr. Anderson experiences the Civil Rights Movement firsthand and worked alongside MLK for a portion of it and his dedication to this subject shows in the classroom. If you attend class regularly, the papers essentially write themselves. No tests, really... unless you count the open-book final.

I took this for a gen ed CD course and was glad to have. Dr. Anderson is very over qualified to teach this. This course is a video driven course and he has no tests, as long as you take a few notes and read the book and follow the EXACT format to his papers you WILL get an A. The final is a culmination of questions from the papers that you do throughout the semester. If you are writing down when he says what the answer is you cant miss the final, he lets you use your books and what ever is written in them...but no paper notes!
He is a very sweet guy and likes it when you have something to say in class~ he gives out candy every day!

I took Phil 323 the very first semester at WKU. At first, the class seemed so hard to me because we had to read a lot of hard materials and the quizzes were just too much. However, you will see that it's worth that!!! Social Ethics is never a piece of cake. Read the chapters before you go to class, participate actively in the class discussions and join the online discussion board then you will be fine!!! Besides, Alan is an awesome teacher. He is so caring, thoughtful and sincerely cares about his students. I love him and still think that he is the greatest professor I've ever had. I recommend him to everyone who is serious about studying and really want to learn something in class.

He has weird humor and his class sucks. I dont know if attendance was mandatory but no one in my class ever showed up. As for books he makes you buy about 4 or 5. And you definentaly need your books. Everything he says in class is not on his quizzes. You have like 6 quizzes and he drops your lowest. Then you have 5 papers. 2 of which are feedback so you dont have to put any effort in them. But the other 3 suck because u have to cite text and crap. I got a C and felt like i did extremely well in his class. His quizzes are out of 25 and the class average was a 14. It is a guessing game. My advice is dont take him and if you decide to go against the grain than pray and than read every night. Oh and you wont like religon after this class.

I took the class with Ashley Monfort, but since she was a grad student she will not be teaching at western any more.. This was a fun class though after a while of bundling in 10 layers of clothes and going to catch horses it gets to be a little old at times. I liked the class and it really improved my riding skills and knowledge and I would not give up that experience!! Its a great class whether you've never ridden or if you've ridden your whole life. If you have ridden, be prepared to throw your own riding style out the window, but you'll be better for it!

Mr. Anderson was a good teacher. If you had questions he would help you and if you ever needed help outside of class he was there. It tries to make funny jokes and overall he was a good teacher. He tried to explain things where it was easy to understand.

Without notice Dr. Anderson took about two months off. Every student was expected to do everything on their own with basically no help from him. We still had quizzes and on average about 15 pages of reading a night, sometimes more. You have 5 reading papers and 2 feedback papers in this class. Along with 4 quizzes and a final, there is no extra credit for this class.
He taught this class like it was for upper level or for people more familiar with Religion. You are expected to read several pages and get the main ideas from it. It sounds easy but this was the worst class I have ever taken and Dr. Anderson was the worst professor I have ever had. I would advise you not to take this class or see if another professor teaches this class.
To me, this class was not beneficial at all, it didn't help me and the only thing I gained from this class was a lack of interest in Religion.

Dr. Anderson is an interesting old man. I guess that's how I would state it. He assuredly has his quirks and unusual ideas (depending on your mind-set), but he puts together an enjoyable class in which he really caters to the students. He truly cares whether or not you like it because he changes the format from semester to semester to ensure this fact. You have to write a lot of short papers, but they're easy as long as you follow the given format.
No serious drawbacks; if you are a fundamental Christian (or fundamentalist of any religion) he will try to get you to loosen up and consider thoughts from other religions. I am a Christian and I enjoyed the class; others seemed to be offended by his approach. However, a couple of these people didn't even try to open their minds to academic matters. Dr. Anderson never forced ideologies upon people, he simply tried to get people to think outside their normal thought patterns. Enjoyable class, lots of reading. Pretty easy if you do the papers and readings.

I have had Dr. A for several classes. I can recommend Social Ethics and racial Justice but not Social Ethics Research. Even though you end with a published paper in the research class, he cancels many classes and does not really get involved in class. I did not feel we learned very much.
Also Racial Justice uses way to many films, little lecture and I felt like I did not learn much. It is not hard, but if you are wanted to learn from the Man who marched with ML King Jr. take Social Ethics.

This class was very interesting in the first half of the class. I thought that it was going to be a cool class, because all that we did was watch movies. i did learn a lot. However, after spring break, we had to read these two books, and write these papers about them. Doesn't sound difficult untill your trying to write about all these statistics. He is a very smart, but doesn't give to much help as one could need when writing the last papers.

This is a hard course, more philosophy than religion. But it is a class that will make you think. You have to come to class and participate to really understand the materials. Mostly essay tests. Good teacher.

If you are intrested in any religion Dr. Anderson is a great professor to have. He is very knowledgeable in many diffrent religions and you can tell that he knows what he is talking about.
He makes class fun by giving out candy, showing pictures, and videos/movies!
He is a really great one to take!

Dr Anderson is by far my favorite teacher. He has made this subject matter not only tollerable, but interesting enough for me to pursue beyond this course. If you want a teacher that gets to know you on a first name basis and helps you out by personally explaining things to your level, he's the man. Even had our whole class over to his house to hang out and bought us all pizza and ice cream.

this class was extremely difficult. reading assignments everynight which were long and very hard to understand. tests are difficult and you never know what to expect. do all extra credit possible. i would not recommend taking this class at all, and if you do, do not take dr. anderson!!!

Dr. Anderson is very qualified for his position. He has marched with Martin Luther King, and worked with the Black Rights Movement in Chicago. While there are no tests in his class, there are several papers, but they are not very diffucult. He often makes fun of himself and hands out candy every day in class.

At first you may think you will never pass this class. However, his tests do not count for as much as you think. There is a paper due about every other week, but this is what brings your grade up.....DO THE PAPERS! I didn't pass but one test and still got a B in the class. Dr. Anderson is a nice man who tries to make his class fun. Take him if you can.

He is a very funny teacher, and cracks you up in class. He is obviously an expert on his topic, but his class is very difficult. He purposely gives difficult tests, he says, to separate the A's and the B's. To me, a lot of the material was over my head. Oh, by the way, if you think that the class is about the bible, forget it. We talked about the bible two class periods and that's it. He is big on Ghandi and King, but that is the good thing... I got a different outlook on those two great men. Again, I liked him as a person, but I will never ever in my life take a class if he is teaching it. GOOD LUCK!!!

Dr. Anderson's class was interesting. The first test was hard, but they got easier as they went. It wasnt too hard, but it was by no means an easy A. Dr. Anderson had a tendance to get off subject sometimes, and stray to irrelavant material. He really knows his racial justice, religion on the other hand, i am not too convinced. This class requires you to write about 4 papers on the color line, other than that, there's three books you read, then discuss in class. He's a very funny teacher, and he's interested more in helping you learn and understand than anything else. I would recommend taking him for anything that you can. Great teacher. Great class

Excellent prof. informal class discussions, explains difficult concepts well and makes it interesting. Requires reading text outside of class, and then discusses clearly what will be on the test from the reading. Requires 1 one page written assignment per week, but it's not bad. He gives you candy for answering questions, too. The best prof I've had so far.
