I LOVE Pruitt and the way he teaches. He is such a laid back guy. If you have taken Social Deviance and like the way that Pruitt teaches, take this class. It's set up the same way and even has a little bit of over lap. I loved it so much, you get to hear some more classic Pruitt stories and it makes the day go by so much faster.

Awesome Teacher. Great topics. Also teaches Sexuality courses which seems intriguing.
Extra credit is not offered because he often gives a curve based on the average on the tests for all his classes over that subject.
No attendance mandatory, however his interesting facts and outlandish stories are sometime test material, which reflects one's attendance. If you do not come to class, you do not know the answer to something that might not be in the notes, but would have remembered if you were in class.

Dr. Pruitt is an excellent professor with hilarious stories. His notes are very organized and his readings are very important for success on the exams. This professor does not make you do busy work or make you read articles that aren't necessary. The reason I got a B in this course is because I didn't take the first exam seriously. You have to study the notes and read the articles if you want an A in this class. There is no other way around it. Other than that, he is a great professor and I enjoyed this class very much!

I was throughly entertained by this class. The material is really interesting, covering what is considered "deviant", and talking about sexual deviance as well as drugs and alcohol. In every class I learned something interesting that I could bring up in conversation later to my friends.
And Dr. Pruitt and his "undergrad stories" are very entertaining. LOL!
It is straight lecture, so bring a pen and spiral and prepare to fill it up. He talks the entire 55 minutes, so no getting out of class early. Honestly though I didn't mind it, because I was so interested in what was being taught. 4 tests are all that makes up the class, but he does grade on a curve.
There are also assigned readings, with questions. The test pulls heavily from these as well as lecture material so you MUST read them if you want a decent grade on the test.
All in all I definitely recommend Dr. Pruitt's class :)

Interesting class and as long as you study AND READ THE POSTED ARTICLES, you should receive a decent grade. His exam questions are somewhat tricky, the answers all seem like they could be right. Again, as long as you study and go to class to get the notes, it's not that difficult. He's a good professor (and has some great stories), but doesn't care whether you fail or pass, so don't try talking to him about your grades.

He does give a lot of notes, and his tests can be tricky, but as long as you do the reading you will be fine! It also helps that he's hot...i'm just saying :-)

He really makes this course harder than it needs to be. I have recieved high As and Bs in all my previous criminology related courses and this was pretty much just the information I learned in those rehashed with some stats thrown in (I have taken Using Statistics in Sociology as well as a side note and got a high B).
I really didn't feel the tests properly measured how well you absorbed and comprehended the material taught in the course. I usually don't study at all, but after I didn't do so hot on his first test I actually took some time to go over all my notes and make sure I understood the material before the tests. Instead of doing better I did progressively worse. There were 4 tests all together. Everyone in the class did so poorly he had to add 14 points to everyone's grades and people still didn't do very well. If it is just one or 2 people doing bad that is one thing, but when the majority of the class is doing bad you kind of have to sit back and think that maybe the professor is the one screwing up at this point. It was a 200 level class, but I felt like I was experiencing a 400 level class.
I type very detailed notes and even record the class using the mic on my laptop to make sure I don't miss anything at all. I read the articles which were tedious as most sociology research articles are. I would come into class feeling very confident and would even go over some of the information with other students and then still bomb the tests bad. I felt like the wording of his questions was poor to say the least, but seeing as he is the only one teaching the class generally you're stuck with him. He isn't a bad guy overall, except for the fact that he can be a bit stuck up at times, but as a teacher I think he really needs to tone it down some.
I love most of my criminology teachers and it is due to them that I really came out of my shell and stopped being so anxious in class, but he isn't one of those that I like. I'll be stuck taking the class with him again next spring when I return from a semester abroad in Japan so hopefully next time I'll be able to figure out his tests so I can do better next time.
So in conclusion, he goes over the material really detailed, but his tests are overkill in their entirety. STUDY STUDY STUDY that and trying to figure out his testing style are the only bits of advice I can offer.

This course may be a little difficult if you are not the best test taker and you procrastinate a lot. Every exam requires you to read and answer questions on articles beforehand. My advice: actually do the reading and do not wait last minute. He lectures most classes, sometimes you watch videos and he does occasionally tell random stories about experiences. It is important to go to his class and listen and take notes. However, contrary to what some people say on here, I have yet to encounter a question on his exams that are about his personal accounts. Overall, it is an interesting and fun class and do not take it if you are easily offended or do not care to discuss sex.

In addition to learning a lot, for the most part, it really was a lot of fun. Dr. Pruitt really knows the topic well and teaches in a fun and enthusiastic style that makes learning the information fun.
Regarding exams and such, his tests were not terrible. You certainly had to study and do the reading questions, but I was able to study for a few hours for each exam and never make bellow a 92%.

Dr. Pruitt is such a good teacher. He makes the class go by SO quickly and the material covered is really interesting. He has been one of my favorite teachers since I've been at WKU. If you get the chance to take him you definately should because he's awesome. He's young enough to relate to the students and talks to us rather than lectures at us. There is no text book you just have to print off articles that you're required to read for the test. The tests aren't hard as long as you study the material.

Pruitt....this man....So I was looking forward to this class because of the interesting topics so I got to the first class early and then this big, tall man walks into the room with this huge tribal tattoo on his forearm and I'm thinking "what in the world have I signed up for???!!"
Pruitt is a good professor. He knows his stuff. He's got everything memorized and could probably teach without his notes. However, the way his class is set-up is kind of ridiculous. You have 4 tests and that's it. There's no other grades to help you. AT ALL!
Attendance isn't mandatory but you better go. Of else you might miss out on some story about how he and Bohlander went drinking at some bar one night and it'll probably end up on the test. Trust me.
Tips for if you get bored in class: Watch how he dances around the room. He's everywhere. He says the word "sorry" alot. Bring up something that relates to him and what he's saying....he loves talking about himself. Also...watch out for his infamous "I had this friend in college..." stories...most of the stories are about him, he just says they're about "his friends". Hehe. Good luck.

If you enjoy not discussing anything and only listening to HIM and only HIM talk actually YELL the lecture notes out for an entire hour, no extra credit, no projects, no questions answered and doing nothing but reading HIS 526 page reader(and I do mean reading the whole book) He wrote this and that is the only reason why you even have to buy it. This class is for you. I loved the material and information it was interesting but the teacher was not effective and did not care if you fail or pass. He is all about himself and all this is for him is money in his pocket. No Professor should act the way he does. You ask for his help and all he does is laugh and say study harder, read more and take good notes.. Easy for him, he enjoys listening to himself talk and share corny, unneccessary stories about his past as a drunk and bar hopper. Enjoy and good luck!! P.S. Don't take this class with him take it with Faine or someone with a heart for the student.

Dr. Pruitt is one of the best professors in the sociology department, he can just be hard at times. He tells you he asked very specific questions, you need to come to class. He tells you what you need to know from the book. Take good notes and listen to his VERY funny stories, they are on the test also. He is pretty easy to talk to and very funny.. I enjoy listening to his lecture and always have up-to-date information on the subject at hand. He does not take role, you grades will show if you didn't come to class or not. I got a C because I miss two times for more than a couple of days for clubs I was involved in and the girl that was suppose to take notes for me, didn't do such a great job. For each of the test I memorized all of the notes and went back and read the chapters for that test. Okay, I am a good student who really enjoys sociology (my major) but Pruitt has to be one of the worst professor I have taken. His class is spent listening to only HIM talk and you are expected to remember his corny examples (yes they appear on exams). He rarely answers questions or lets class discussion occur, often he would just ignore student's raised hands!! You MUST read and study his article questions for every exam, or really expect to do poorly on his exams. If you enjoy classes where you must just memorize notes and spit back out the information without engaging brain, then you'll probably enjoy Dr. Pruitt.

First, if you don't have someone to get your notes from, you had better be there everyday. But, the girl in front of me missed like 12 times in the summer session, I gave her the notes and she made 90's on all the exams. Much of exams come from lecture and you must read the readings and he gives you the questions. If you study your notes and memorize the questions from the readings, no problemo. I thought the class was interesting, except Dr. Pruitt talks so fast it is as if he is on speed. He doesn't allow much time for class participation and cuts students off at times and I sensed some resentment from students because of this. He tells an extremely large amount of personal stories and a lot of them involve his involvement with drinking at local bars with Dr. Bolander and others and his attending rave parties, etc., but was ademant that he DOES NOT USE ILICIT DRUGS, even though his friends do. I really don't think he does for he couldn't remember all the details of his stories if he did. He does not go over the exams in class. He said no one in the dept. does, even though I know that is not true for I have had other sociology classes. If you want to trust your scantron, fine, if not, you have to go to his office while he searches through the piles and mounds of papers and scantrons so you may view it. I like him. I think he's funny and I think since he was forced to go to a Christian School growing up, he is still blowing it out at 40. You go dude!

Pruitt is absolutely splendid. There are a lot of notes but they are on power point so you can get them all down. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you miss a lot then you are guaranteeing yourself a bad grade because of the amount of information he supplies each day. On the bright side, I can promise that you won't even want to miss this class because he is hysterical and the topics are of particular interest to most college students. There are three basic tips to do well in his class:
1. Don't miss class
2. Answer the assigned questions from his website for the tests
3. Listen to his stories because they often appear on the tests
Other than that just sit back and enjoy the ride. His classes always prove to be fabulous!

If you can take someone else, definitely do! There are 4 tests in the class. The material is extremely boring. You take notes everyday and that is it. There are no other points except for the tests. He is boring, the class is boring! Take another class for Gen. Ed. if you dont have to take this!

Dr. Pruitt is a great teacher and he adds his own expierence in with the class so its not straight from a text book or out of his notes. He makes the class interesting. But make sure that you go to class because the stories that he tells will be on the test.

Dr. Pruitt is one of the best teachers here at Western. His lectures are so interesting that you won't believe that class is over when he lets you go. He doesn't have an attendance policy, but you won't want to miss anyway. His tests can be a little tricky, but if you study your notes, the reader questions, and come to class then you shouldn't have any problems. I LOVED this class and I plan on taking him again for sex and society.

This class was extremely interesting. I really enjoyed it and Dr. Pruitt makes it interesting. He's a pretty cool guy and his stories will keep you entertained. The tests aren't hard if you print out the study questions online and study your notes well. He will also throw in a question or two from the videos you watch in class. I would advise going to class everyday because his notes are pretty in depth. You should also go the last Friday before spring break because he will give you a few extra points for showing up. Overall a great class that I didn't dread getting up and going to.

I really enjoyed this class and I really liked Mr.Pruitt as a teacher. As long as you pay attention and study your notes and also DO THE STUDY QUESTIONS - this is very important , you will do fine. I got an A on all the test . Just study your notes and all the answers to the questions and you will make a good grade.

pruitt was a great teacher and the class was very enjoyable. he was sure to use stories to keep you interested. there were a bunch of notes, but everything was on a powerpoint presentation and spoon fed to you. we watched a few (good) movies and there was never homework. for the exams you have to memorize all of your notes, even though it's a lot. but the questions are pretty much word for word of the notes given in class. class attendance is not mandatory, but a few questions will be on the exams that single out class attendance, so be sure to listen to his stories.

Matt Pruitt is the most wonderful Professor ever! I am not even a sociology major and I am looking at other classes he teaches just because he is that awesome! Not only is he hysterical and his classes entertaining and educational, but he just makes the whole subject fun. He is very well organized and all of his notes are given on Power Point while he lectures along with it. He has great stories that he shares with the class and his lectures flow like a normal conversation. He shows a few videos that are funny too. The textbook isn't required, but you will need because he will post questions on his website over material that he doesn't cover in class that will be on the tests. Attendance isn't required, but I wouldn't suggest skipping because of the amount of notes he gives every day; I wouldn't say it's overkill but it is a lot of notes. But like I said, his class is so interesting and fun that skipping won't be a problem anyway - you won't want to at all! I HIGHLY suggest taking Professor Pruitt if you are looking at a Sociology class.

Dr. Pruitt is a very down to earth professor who can really relate to his students. He was in a fraternity in college and has a million hilarious stories to tell about it. The class is very interesting, and he gives you the text material to look over, so you don't have to read the book. I plan on taking more of his classes.

I enjoyed going to this class. It is hard if you skip class since it is not mandatory to be there. You take notes through the whole class but it is interesting subjects. I would suggest going to class anyway because it is a neat class and his lectures are really interesting. He has funny stories from when he went to Western and he's also younger so he remembers how we think and that makes it better.

To do well in this class you absolutely HAVE to go everyday AND answer the study guide questions he gives you, which aren't hard at all. Each test (and there are 4) have study guide questions that take about an hour to complete. Do these and study them along with your notes and you will do fine. Also, Dr. Pruitt is VERY fun to listen to. His anecdotes are worth listening to daily and definitely makes class fresh and enjoyable, unlike 99% of other WKU professors. Also, pay close attention to these stories because he will use them for tests. ALWAYS pay close attention to videos, notes, readings, and stories. He will use the smallest, most minute bit from each and put it on a test. Don't let anything go unnoticed. By the way, make sure you don't miss what his favorite booklet on STD's is. It's from a story, but you'll be tested on it.

Dr. Pruitt's lectures, while pretty risque and graphic, are always interesting and informative, to say the least. Class is never dull. To do well on his tests you must attend everyday and do the corresponding study guide questions that are from the readings. Pay close attention to his stories and the readings. He tests you on the smallest bit of each, so watch out for the little things. Like I said, go everyday and do the study guide questions and you will do fine and you won't have to study much.

As long as you do study questions that go along with the readings each time, and go to class a lot, the tests will be easy. The only reason I got a C was because I missed a lot of classes.
He is not lenient at all, though. The grade you get is the grade you are stuck with.

This is one of the most interesting courses you can take at Western. Pruitt is a very good professor and is very organized in his lectures. The only hard part about this course is he assigns questions from chapters in the book that you don't go over in class, and on each of the 4 tests there will be 5 or so questions from this list. Each list per test has about 50 questions so its very time consuming. Other than that if you attend class its hard to fail this class. The class is about all the bad things college kids do, so you already know the material for the most part.
