Great class! Tests are easy and he made the speeches fun to give. I took it honors so there were not as many students in the course--making it less people to speak in front of. He does his grading on a point scale so once you reach the grade you want you can stop doing any of the work (like taking the final). The quizzes online are easy and come directly from the power point slides. He has an extra credit folder on blackboard that he does not tell anyone is there but will occasionally post extra credit assignments. He doesn't tell anyone about these but if you do them you'll get more points and not have to worry about final tests/speeches

This was one of the harder class I took in the summer on line. Did not like my grade tied in with the work of other students. Lots of stress on time and amount of papers and the final all in two week time period. Loved the teacher and learned alot. If you can skyp this class is for you. If you like research this class is for you. If you have worked in groups this class is for you.

Mr. Hughes is a super nice guy! He is professional and fair professor. Attendance is counted and absences will count against your grade. The notes are mostly common sense and aren't necessary to take for the class. You will give three speeches and he isn't too hard on the grading. Keep up with the class and an A is very easy and obtainable.

Mr. Hughes is a great professor and I would recommend anyone to take his class. He is very passionate about what he teaches and makes this general education class an easy A. First of all, he gives out extra credit like its Halloween candy, so much to the point were you can have above an A before the final (I had a 97% or so before the final exam). Second, he specifically tells you what to put on your outlines and incorporate into your speeches in order for them to be effective.
Now, the break down of the class: There are two exams which are the midterm and (possibly) the final. Both of these are worth 75 points out of the possible 800. Recommendation for these: Study your ass off for the midterm so you don't have to take the final =D. There are also 3 speeches along with outlines on each of them which make up a majority of your grade so do well on them (Mr. Hughes is more than happy to work with you on those). You also have around 16 online quizzes from the text that are about 10 questions each, but he always throws in 2 extra credit questions or so which is cool. OH! Attendance is mandatory (he starts knocking off 5 points for each absence after the first unexcused one).
Always check the extra credit folder on blackboard, he hides it there and doesn't announce it in class. Have fun in this class, and be yourself when you speak! You'll do fine! Get > 720 points and it'll save you a final on finals week!

For a class that is supposed to be easy, Mr. Hughes makes it something it shouldn't be. He takes every aspect of the class to the next level. For every speech (there's 3), you have to submit a VERY structured outline according to his specifications. Also, every speech has to be evaluated using specific software that ONLY WKU computers have installed, and it's not even on all of them so it's specific locations on campus. You have to print off the evaluation and turn it in to class. They take about a half hour or so to do. Makeup speeches are TERRIBLE. I haven't had to do one but I was around when one went on. It's the same as a normal speech except you have to find 7 FRIENDS to drag to campus at 7 am in the morning to be your "audience". I find that almost impossible, I don't know about your situation though. Extra credit for him is like jumping through a hoop on fire 500 feet above the ground. He allows you to attend SPEECHES (not seminars) on campus or around Bowling Green that he specifies, then when done attending, you have to write a two page paper on the speech. This guy is crazy. Also, there is a quiz on Blackboard before every class that must be done. Now, he's quite lenient on them in that he re-opens them frequently during the semester to people who have fallen behind, but he may just be doing this for us, I don't know. You must read the textbook to have the answers for the quizzes! I don't like this professor, and will not be recommending him to my friends! Lastly, he gives you a NY Times every Wednesday.

Professor Hughes has to be the nicest professor at Western. He is very understanding and cares about his students. He makes public speaking a very tolerable thing, even for people who are fearful of speaking in front of others. He makes the class enjoyable. As long as you pay attention in class and take notes, which he also posts on Blackboard, you will do fine in this class. There are only two tests, the midterm and final, and if you have a certain amount of points by the end of the semester, you do not have to take the final. He also gives plenty of extra credit opportunities! DEFINATELY TAKE HIM BEFORE YOU LEAVE WKU!!!

The class would not be hard if all material was covered so that you can understand, but it is not. Notes are very scattered and not necessarily important to topics being tested over. Speeches are graded over outlines significantly more than the actual speech delivery. Grades are very arbitrary and extra credit opportunities are actually assignments within themselves.

Professor Hughes is absolutely amazing. It consists of 4 speeches, 4 outlines, 1 exam and a final (that you dont have to take IF your grade is like 630/700) you also do a few papers like critiques. Everything is great. He also works with you and uderstand the fear of public speaking that some people have. He is truly the ideal professor for this course. I HIGHLY recommend him. =)

Very Nice Teacher. Explains everything thoroughly and clearly.
One Test during the semester. 30 questions. 5 speeches throughout the class. Not Hard at All.
He gives out easy extra credit.
If you have an A before the Final, or if you are okay with the grade you have, you don't have to take the final. But Final is very easy.
You have to attend class, he passes around an attendance sheet everyday and if you miss your schedule speech day, you have to make it up at 8 am and you have to provide your audience of 5 or 6 people.. not fun at all.

Basically, if you can write a speech and present it, then you are fine. Hughes is a good teacher and a great person. He breaks the ice quick the first day. Sometimes he is boring, but then other times he is just a crazy man. The speeches are the same across the entire communcations department, so no change there. But near the end of the semester he does tend to offer more. good class.

Mr. Hughes is understanding and is very clear about what he wants from his students. Pay attention to what he asks for in his syllabus and his assignments and there should be no problem. You get one free unexcused absence, but after that he deducts points from your grade and they can add up if you don't do great on everything else. If you have enough points after all is said and done, you don't have to take the final. There's only one other exam in the class and it's only 30 points, so it's not a huge deal -- it's common sense stuff really.

Be prepared to spend a lot time gathering with your group outside the classroom. This class is very challenging for the full-time working person due to the scheduling of group meetings, and making arrangements with all of your group members. I would suggest taking this course if you have the possibility of being part-time status for a semester. The professor is really cool and laid back. He had us buy clickers for his class, but he only had us use them twice on class polls. Reading the chapters and taking the online quizzes were essential.

Mr. Hughes is an excellent professor. He is very easy going and just an overall nice guy. The class is not hard, but you do have to do your work to do well. Although this class sucked, the professor made it easier than I thought he would. The tests are over powerpoints which he shows during class and then posts on blackboard about a week before each exam. That makes it nice because you don't have to take down notes in class but he still expects you to show up. He grades the speeches fairly easy but as the semester goes on, he grades them harder. If it wasn't for the extra credit, I probably would not have an A.

Although Mr. Hughes is very knowledgable on the subject of public speaking, he grades to the extreme. Every possible point he can count off, he will. I don't think he does this to be mean, he just expects his students (who are usually freshmen) to almost be professional speakers already. He teaches well, but he places too much emphasis on perfection rather than effort and improvement. Also, he makes you do your main speech (the call-to-action speech), which is supposed to be over a topic that you feel very strongly about, over volunteer work that you are required to do for the class. This is unfair for the students, since it's very hard to do a motivation speech over a subject which they themselves are not very motivated about. If you are not a talented public speaker already, I would not reccomend taking Comm 145 with Professor Gary Hughes. He's a very nice guy, but his class is more difficult than it has to be.

This teacher was not a good teacher. He requires you to do 10 hours of community service for your call to action and informative speeches which has to be done during the semester in which you take the class. His tests are based a lot on the book, but the notes arent very detailed so you have to read to do well. He is nice but he grades hard on speeches and doing service was annoying since most people dont have time for it.

Its ridiculous...but overall the class is ok and reccomend takin this guy...but not very highly.

Mr. Hughes is a marvelous professor to have for Public Speaking. He is pretty laid back so if you have a fear of speaking in public I would take him. He does notes on powerpoint and they are basically straight from the book. I never really copied them down because he posts a study guide on blackboard and you can get the answers out of the book. his tests are multiple choice for the most part but he will throw in the occasional essay or matching or listing question to spice it up a little. For the final, if you have at least 450 points by the time the final rolls around you don't have to take it. If you do have to take it, it's not cumulative so it isn't that hard. For the speeches - look nice! He will take off points if you look sloppy or unprofessional (don't wear jeans!). He is a stickler for vocalized pauses ("um" "uh") as well. With attendance, if you miss more than 3 times he will take off 10 points. And don't miss on your speech day unless you have a very VERY good reason and it can be proven because if you miss your speech just because he won't let you make it up. All in all though, he is extremely caring and a wonderful guy. I left his class wishing all of my professors were as kind as he is. I would highly reccommend him.

Mr. Hughes was an okay teacher. you will not pass the class if you cannot do a speech in front of people. You have to do atleast 5 speeches that go from 1 minute to 10 minutes. They are very easy, but I can speak in front of people. The tests are simple. He gives you all the notes on overhead and lets you copy them and the tests are the exact notes. He also gives a review sheet with all the questions from the test on it. It's an okay class. you have to give a little effort though.

Second, I believe that to use the phrase "he is not extremely bright" is a bit harsh and offensive for someone who graduated summa cum laude from the undergraduate program and maintained a 4.0 for the M.A.
