This class is really difficult, especially compared to the first tax class. You spend the entire semester figuring basis in property and gains/losses. If you did not like the last part of 430 (property transactions), you will not like this class. Instead of tests he gives quizzes after almost every chapter, they usually aren't too bad because the info is fresh in your mind. The final is comprehensive and you have to remember every little rule for every situation in order to do well. You don't get a cheat sheet like in Dr. Wade's class. He is a very nice man though, but easily gets off topic with politics and college sports. Good luck!

Mr. Hayes is easily the most boring professor I have had and doesn't really teach the material. Be prepared to work through the problems yourself. He posts the answers to homework problems on the overhead and you have to spend lots of time going through and figuring out why we did certain things. He does a REALLY good job telling you what to prepare for the test. You usually won't be shocked by anything. If he gives you a list of definitions or any handout, be sure to study it! I didn't study a handout that much one time and every single definition on it was on the test. This class is tough, be prepared! He ends up curving a little bit, so every little bit helps. Buy a study guide at bookstore.

If you had ACCT 430 with Dr. Wade, be prepared for a shock. This class is much more difficult. Dr. Hays is a very intelligent man and seems to enjoy tax accounting, but he tends to get off topic rather easily and quickly jumps on his political soapbox. Rather than having exams, you have a quiz over most chapters (only one chapter at a time). I liked this about the class. These are worth 40 points and have approximately five T/F questions, several MC questions, and sometimes a couple of problems to work out. I suggest going to the textbook's website and doing the T/F questions on the web to prepare for the T/F questions. Be sure to study all of the problems you go over in class for the MC and problem portions of these quizzes. We had eight quizzes. He also assigns two research assignments using the RIA website (password info provided in class). These were worth 20 points each. The final is worth 150 points and is very difficult because of the wide variety of topics covered in the class. Studying the old quizzes is not enough to do well on the final. You should also study all of your old homework problems. The class is pretty straight-forward with few surprises.

Dr. Hays is the only professor that teaches this class (unless you take it during the summer). I'm not especially fond of the teaching style in this class. He uses overheads to go over the problems, rather than working them out on the board like other professors. The material is pretty dry. Dr. Hays lists homework problems on the syllabus for each class day. One of these problems is highlighted and he might collect that homework assignment. If you turn in all homework problems during the course, you can receive 5 extra points. If you miss one, no gain and no loss. If you miss more than one, he deducts 5 points for every one missed. These assignments don't have to be right, just complete. There are three tests and a cumulative final. The first three tests are worth 100 pts. ea. and cover three chapters. These tests are multiple choice (difficult and worth apx. 3 pts ea.) and a problem from each of the three chapters. The multiple choice final is comprehensive and is worth 200 pts. Dr. Hays does a good job about mentioning what will probably be on the test during class. He also gives you a good idea about what problems will be on the tests.

I really enjoyed this teacher. He is very laid back and he understands that not everyone is great at accounting and he teaches so that everyone can understand.

Prof. Hays is a really nice man that knows what he is talking about. The only problem is Accounting is a very hard subject. So with both those varibles your chances are pretty good that you'll do okay. I'd recommend taking Prof Hays and make sure you are always there and study for quizzes, cause they will really help you.

Charlie Hays is a good teacher who is always willing to help you when you need it. He gives some outside assignments that are fairly easy to gain extra points. His tests are multiple choice and aren't too difficult. I would recommend him for this course.

This was one of the easiest classes I have ever had. Dr. Hays gives hardly any homework and the tests are pretty much common sense. I didn't even get the book and I got a 100 on the first test. I strongly suggest taking Dr. Hays.
