The class is 40 mid-term and 60 final. If you do bad on the mid-term, which is half the class, Downing allows you to write a paper in order to recover half the points loss on the mid-term back. This class is a class you should not get a C.

Downing is very easy going. If you don't care, neither does he. Your grade reflects you in that class. As some have previously stated, this class is watching slides, him telling you the significance that these buildings have to the world, and some of his opinions (which can be taken more as insight, or out of the box thinking). The class is fairly easy, I didn't make most of them, and just picked up the study guides for the Mid-Term and Final and studied those. That is the only hard part during the entire semester.

There were only two tests during the whole semester which was the mid-term and the final. You have to remember ten different buildings, what year they were made, who designed it, and the significance.

Don't even think about buying the text for this class. The book is NOT required, no matter what anyone tells you. The class is extremely boring - you just look at slides of buildings,,,,in the dark. The only classes you need to show up for are the mid-term and final reviews. Make sure to study for them, though, as they are a huge part of your grade. The other part comes from a research paper on an architectural subject. The class would be easy, but the mid-term and final were tedious in that they were mainly memorizing a lot of info about certain buildings. If you happen to go to the classes, be prepared to hear Downing's opinions on what he shows you, and you will most likely not agree. There are some ugly buildings out there that, for whatever reason, they call great architecture.

Downing is very passionate about his classes, makes any subject interesting. The more you participate the better the class. The class is mostly notes with a few simple papers to write along with tests and a final. All tests are short answer or essay.

This class was great...All you do is look at powerpoints of buildings through out history. If you pay some attention you will be fine the tests are all essay, but if you attend the review session and study the pictures in the review you will be fine. The class is a good one to just kick back in, don't be intimidated by Downing's large vocabulary, he isn't that tough!
