This class was okay, not terribly difficult but sometimes not the most entertaining. The professor at times gets off topic but knows his stuff. All tests essay or short answer and the grading scale is questionable. For example on one test I got an A- on the essay and a B++ on short answer... so I am truly unsure what the average grade of an A- and a B++ are (A? A-?) and you don't know where you stand grade wise for most of the class. I don't actually know if I got the full affect of Art Apprec, I'm betting I didn't.

Dr. Klein is a very sweet, old man! He loves learning and all things art. He is very "old-skool" when it comes to teaching though...we're talking using an actual slide projector and slides during lectures. And when I say lectures, I mean lectures! He writes key names and dates on the board, but the rest of the note taking is pretty much up to you. He gives essay only exams. And he is kinda nit-picky with the first one, but he kinda lightens up on the latter exams.
DO NOT buy the book. The book that he "requires" is not availible in the bookstore. You have to order it offline. But don't do it, cause it really will do nothing for your grade.
He takes attendance everyday, and you can only miss up to 3 days...so go! He might seem very VERY boring at first, but as he gets used to the class, he makes funny jokes and tells silly stories and he even brought us bags of candy toward the end of class.
So, if you're up for a challenge, and enjoy listening to a cute, little old man make naughty jokes, take Klein!

First of all, he is very old and very slow in everything he does. So, his class is exceptionally boring and he requires you to come. His tests are all essays, only he doesn't give you a question, he expects you to write about all your knowledge on the paintings he talks about in class. All these paintings are straight from the text book, which he requires that you have. He gets very angry if come the third or fourth day of class you don't have a textbook. I recommend you steer clear of this class if at all possible, do whatever it takes to get a different teacher. It was a miracle that I passed this class. The only thing that helped me was excessive studying and writing outlines for my essays before test days.

Klein, overall, is a good teacher. He really knows the material and he always goes over the notes from the previous class day before he discusses anything new. All his tests are essays and they can sometimes take the whole week to finish, depending on how much we need to cover, and he reviews everything about a week before each test. I do suggest you get a mini tape recorder for his class because he doesn't really tell you specific things to write down so it's hard to get the right notes on paper. And if your like me and have a tendency to fall asleep during lectures, a tape recorder for his classes can do you a lot of good.

I really don't like Mr. Klein, but the class is so easy its hard not to reccommend it. He is a really old man who can't hear very well so its really hard to ask questions in class (not that you'll have many). There was never a true attendace policy stated on the syllabus but he does take daily attendance. (I never hesitated in skipping, and he never seemed to mind) When you do go to class, bring the book because it does help to follow along and take some notes.
Studying is easy for his tests. All essay tests the typically last a few days (not everyone takes that long, but if you finish early, you don't have to come to class) He gives you the topic in the class before the test so all you have to do is answer it and redo it in class (Blue Book!).
Oh yeah, he doesn't grade his tests (at least he didn't grade our class's) his TA does. I got a poor grade on my first exam and went back and argued and then he read it and changed my grade. Hes also very hard to meet with outside of class so try to avoid having to do that.
Take this class because its easy, but the prof kind of sucks

I really learned a lot during this course. This class enabled me to understand concepts about all facets of art. I was able to use critical thinking skills in trying to pull out every inch of information I could muster for the essays. Dr. Klein also hands out the New York Times just about every day. It was never an uninteresting day.

For a 100 level course, I about died! After weeks of lecture that I frantically had to keep up with taking notes I withdrew because he didn't like the way I had written my essay because it was not how he would have worded it. If you fall asleep in this class expect to be embarassed. There was a girl in my eight o'clock that got yelled at every time and once she even left crying. He even says pretty hurtful stuff to students who try hard in his class. I once went to a lecture of his where he actually said women don't make very good artists. Expect to be heavilly criticized if you are a female. If you are male, you will probably make a good grade. Personally, I hope he chokes on his damn beret!

Many may think Klein is a boring old man that loves to repeat the same artist info over and over; but it is the quality of a student's participation that makes the class great. If you have a brain in your head and can ask thoughtful and intelligent questions the class is much more interesting. If he has nothing to feed on from his students then, of course, the class is boring note taking. It's the students fault if the class is boring not his. If you are a serious art student that wants to study and understand art and the artists then I highly recommend Klein.

You definetly will need to bring your book everyday, because he uses it all the time. I took this as an honors course and it worked out fine. Of course it was a little boring, but unless you're an art major you're going to think that. The tests were each one very long essay. He reviews about what should be in the essay a whole lot. I suggest writing it out and memorizing it giving lots of attention to details like dates. He curves grades according to attendance.

Mr. Klein can be very boring, but if you are looking to get an A, you can easily get it in his class. He has a tendency to go over the same artists several times, but this makes the tests easier. He gives you 1 essay on each day of the test and gives you the question in advance. You don't have any homework or in-class assignments. It is the least stressful course I have had.

For an Honors course this class is a joke. He goes over the same 3 artists or so until your exam. You know them through and through. Then if you read the small paragraphs in the text over the paintings you are guaranteed an A on your exam. His exams are on Tuesday and Thursday but they're one essay per day. It really is the easiest course I have taken.

This class was a complete waste of my time. He did know what he was talking about, for the most part, but he could not communicate it to his students at all. Part of being a teacher is knowing your subject, but another important part is being able to teach, which he can not do. His tests are very difficult. Don't take Klein, you WILL regret it.

What was this guy doing...He expects you to know everything about a painting but then he decidedes he wants you to know something else then what he asked you on the essay and deduces points. If you are gonna take him keep quiet because questions piss him off and he deduces your grade a letter (hence a C)

DO NOT TAKE MICHAEL KLEIN! He is simply awful. He does not grade fairly and half of the stuff he has on the tests are not even covered in the notes, which are quite extensive. I am not just saying this because I got a C, because upon looking back, I am fortunate enough to have received that grade. He is awful. Don't take. Be happy.

Reading the incredibly negative reviews of Dr. Klein got on my nerves more than a little. Dr. Klein is the kind of teacher who you have to adjust your style for, not vice versa. It is his class and he gives the information you need to know for his tests almost to the point of drilling it into your head. People who sit and talk during his class or bitch constantly about his teaching style to the point where they don't hear what he is saying have no right to get pissed off when they don't know the material and don't get the grades they want. Many of the people in the Humanities Semester I was in didn't pay attention to or respect Dr. Klein and they really missed out on the incredible wealth of information he can impart not just in his art class but on a variety of current events topics outside of class. Dr. Klein's class is what you make of it. If you have basic writing skills and an elementary grasp of the English language you should have no problems with his tests, providing you pay attention and don't expect him to lay it out on a little silver platter for you to take at your leisure. Lazy and unimaginative people who like to complain about the grades they deserve rather than getting off their lazy asses and studying or listening in class probably shouldn't take his class or even attend college for that matter. People like that should grow up or get the hell out.

He obviously took way too many drugs and might still be on them. He rarely makes sense. I learned absolutuly nothing in his class. DO NOT TAKE DR. KLEIN.

He is very boring and talks the whole time. If you want to do good on his test - you have to write 1/2 a blue book worth of information for the essay tests. be prepared to take notes the whole class period. His test can be confusing. He wants you to know every little detail about a painting. If you don't like studying - this is not the class for you!

Dr. Klein knows a lot about art and there is no doubt that his interest in teaching is genuine. However, he tends to be very scatterbrained and the notes he gives and the stuff he writes on the board is very unorganized. If you take good notes, you can probably handle him, but it is a good idea to read the book so you know exactly what he's talking about because sometimes he skips over things and can confuse you easily.

Dr. Klein is a very good teacher. He is enthusiastic about his course. He grades to hard on spelling and grammar though. He talks about an art piece several times, more than necessary. However, this is good, because he drills it into your head and very little studying is needed. I got an A in there, and I normally studied the night before, including the final. I liked him. He had a very nice personality, and he trys hard to get people to like art.

The teacher is eccentric and scatter-brained. He cannot remember from one day to the next what is going on in the class, or what the assignments are. He once gave me an A on a rough draft, then a B on the final, even though I made his corrections. When I asked him about it, he said that he must have been in a better mood when he was grading the rough draft. Another time, he counted off points for me not doing his corrections until I went through my paper and showed him where I made every correction he asked for. It's impossible to get inside his head and figure out what he wants. He also counted off somebody's paper for analyzing paintings, which is what the assignment was. Look over your stuff carefully when you get it back.
He started out the semester saying we would do 12 papers that would be 400-500 words. The second day, he changed it to 6 papers that would be 800-1000 words. We ended up doing 3 papers. So don't get scared off in the beginning.

All I have to say about this man is he is a horrible professor. He expects you to like art and be able to understand what Leonardo or whoever you're writing a paper about is trying to accomplish in their "masterpiece". If you are used to getting A's on papers, expect a C. If you don't really give a crap about art and don't care to ever understand it than don't take this class with this man!!!

Yeah, it's boring... but he's old and probably can't help it. You will fall asleep during the slide show lectures. Take as many notes as possible, sometimes you can use them on tests. On essay tests write as much as you possibly can.
