Dr. Payne is a great professor. She takes the time to help you out with challenging material in the class. The class wasn't terribly difficult, but you have to study the material i.e. phonetics and material in the book. There are many quizzes, but she drops the lowest one. The final is a part from Rip Van Winkle that you have to read. On this, she grades you on your vocal clarity, pronounced words, and other things. Unit tests aren't that hard, just study like crazy for them. Overall, she is an excellent professor, and I would definately take her again.

On the outside Dr. Payne seems like a really great lady and teacher, but now I know otherwise. This class was so difficult. Do not let the other evaluations fool you. I promise, I am telling the absolute truth. Me and my friend was one freeking point from a B in the class, just one point. After telling us that we had improved she still gave us a C. There was one particular guy in the class who was never thei,r but she excused all of his absences and treated him like a God. My friend in the class lost someone very close and dear to her, and Dr. Payne did not even care although she professes to be a Christian and a understaning woman. She was and is a total b@@@@. I would not recommend her for anything Trusd me I am not just saying all this becasue I made a C. I am saying it so you will not get fooled like me and my freind. I you need this class well then good luck, because no one else teaches it. Have fun..

This class is challenging because it's like you're learning a whole new language. However, Dr. Payne is very willing to work with you and has review sessions scheduled before class starts if you need additional work. She's a very nice teacher. Her tests are fairly difficult because they are mostly T/F questions over reading from the book, which you don't go over in class.

This is one of the only classes where attendance is absolutely necessary. If you miss one day, you are very far behind. However, if you try hard, study a little bit each day or couple of days, you should be fine. Dr. Payne is very helpful if you make the effort. Also, be sure to get the textbook even though you can't return it because all the information is in there. Again, not that bad, but definitely not cake either.

This class is not easy, BUT EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE IT ANYWAY. I didn't like the class at the beginning (had a C early-on), but stuck with it, and came out with a low A. More importantly, I learned an extensive amount about diction, and how to use it. This course should be required for broadcasting majors. Dr. Payne is an excellent professor. I really enjoyed this class and feel that I learned a great deal.

This is the biggest piece of garbage class at Western. I took this class to help improve my broadcasting voice -- the title of the class is VOICE & DICTION isn't it? WELL IT WON'T HELP YOU. All she teaches is the history of certain words and makes sounds like a monkey. The most annoying thing I found in the class is that you have to memorize the history of about 1,000 words over the semester -- PAIN IN THE BUTT. She is also rather snooty and she treats you like a high schooler. If you ever have to go in her office, her chair is so high you'd think she was sitting on the Empire State Building. Bottom line, don't take this class if you are a broadcasting major (it's an elective for BCOM)... it won't help. Take CD 090 from the Communication Disorders department if you want to work on your broadcasting voice. However, if you are a speech communication major, the class might be for you.

Dr. Payne is a good teacher, but you have to do everything EXACTLY as she says. Follow the directions to the letter, or else. She is very helpful if you take the class seriously.

It's a ridiculous class that did nothing to make me a better speaker. One minute she'll explain a particular pronunciation as "That's what the dictionary says." and then turn around 5 minutes later and say the dictionary is incorrect about something else. Rushes through material in order to get a certain amount of quizzes in. Explanation on key points is lackluster at best. nice lady, easy to like her, hard to respect her teaching abilities.

Dr. Payne is nice, but she is hard to understand, and is her grading system. I also didn't feel like she prepared us enough for the speeches we had to do.

She grades speeches very difficultly. She definelty favors female students. Her tests are hard and she won't give explanations for misleading questions on her tests.

Read the book even though it is not explicitly stated in the class. It's very important to stay up to date on your reading. Also, there is a large paper due at the end of the semester. Be sure to write it as you go along. It's much easier and more efficient that way. Dr. Payne does a wonderful job teaching this class. She enjoys the subject and the students. I'd highly recommend that you take this class if you possibly can.

dr. payne had a backwards way of teaching. Although she was very nice, she would ask if we had assignments done when we hadn't even had them assigned to us. Her grading system was never explained, and many found themselves having to guess at how the assignemetns needed to be done, as she also never explained them in much detail, and the book didn't help.
