Tests are word for word from the notes. He basically tells you the test on review day. Its a lot of memorization but should be fairly easy as long as you take notes. The class can get pretty boring because he talks so much but I would recommend him.

This class is purely notes. He may hand out some information, but every class is strictly note taking. He asks for short simple homework assignments every once in a while, and sometimes doesn't even take them up. Your grade depends on the exams and play reviews. He does not take attendance but if you miss class, you need to have someone who takes good notes to depend on. Before each exam, he takes a day to review everything that is going to be on the exam and answers any questions. He is very theatrical and artsy. He tells many stories about his theatre experiences, which really keeps the class interesting if you're bored by theatre facts. For the play reviews, he tells you exactly what he is looking for in outline form. The review has to be around 4 pages but if you answer all of those questions then you have an A. I made my own study guides for each exam, which I greatly suggest, and earned A's on every one. He does not try to be difficult at all and is really easy to talk to if you need to take the exam at another time or have a question about your grade. He does not use Blackboard but will answer your emails. I'm an English major, and he made me wish I was in theatre.

This is an updated review of him because it looks as if he has changed a bit overtime!
Bartlett by far is a fantastic teacher! He has no books that he uses so he goes purely by notes that he gives. He is so in-depth with his notes that is good to pay attention because his notes are word by word the same for the test. I have taken notes on everything that he has said, studied that and I received an 100 on my first test and a 99 on the second.
He'll give you an exact format for play reviews, follow that and you'll be looking at another easy A.
Just show up to class, take the notes and study those notes and I promise you'll do well in that class.
He is a great teacher with a good personality and his voice is great because he reminds you of that typical theatre teacher with the booming voice.
Just saying, if you want an easy grade with some moderate work, his class is the one to take fore sure!

I thought this class was going to be an easy A. He told us at the beginning of the semester that as long as you came to class and did your assignments you would get an A. I liked Bartlett at first, he is a funny guy.. but as the semester went on I began to see a different side to him. He is smart and rude. He grades hard on his papers and his tests are over so much information. The last test I took in there I had 5 questions right that the book had listed. He counted them wrong. I do not advise taking him... at all.

Theatre Appreciation is an easy class that anybody should do well in if they try in the least bit. Wes does a good job of telling you exactly what he wants from you in the class, and what it takes to get an "A". Expect 2 theatre reviews, and 3-4 tests.

Prepare to take notes! If you mis a day make sure that you copy the notes from somebody. He'll take attendance every now and then. He covers too much material for the gen ed class. He'll make you spill your brains out when it comes to test. There're at least 3 essays on each test (if not more). If you take good notes and can keep up with him you'll be fine, b/c he'll tell you what you'll need to know for the test. Also, make sure that you're a fast writer otherwise, don't take him. I had to borrow the notes from my neighbor half the time because he spils out 75 words per min. and keeps going, and going, and going.

Mr. Bartlett is a very engaging lecturer who is super nice and gives out extra credit for attending class like attending classes is an exceptional feat. He'll tell you exactly what is going to be on the exam the class meeting before you have it, which is convenient and cowardly. He likes to go out of his way to help students grade-wise. There are two heavily weighted (40% total, as much as tests) play reviews that have to be lengthy but following his directions and using good prose and analysis will help you get a good grade on them. If you have an A before the final, you don't have to take it, which is a nice way to allow yourself to breathe during finals week.

He should not be teaching a 100-level course. There is way too much information that he expects you to know for super-long tests. It would be fine if this were a 200-300 level course, but it was very time consuming for being such a simple class.

Mr. Bartlett is a great teacher, you have to do some out of class work though (attending plays) but I really liked this class. It was pretty easy and if you memorize the notes you'll ace the class. He has such a love for theatre. He is good guy!

This is the worst 100 level class I have taken! Yeah, Mr. Bartlett knows a lot about theater, but this is a mandatory class that is suppose to be for freshman. He makes you take TONS of notes, and has long ESSAY tests for many things he doesn't review in class! TOO PICKY!! And NOT a good class to take!

This class was ridiculous. He would tell us to read 2 certain chapters, then give us a 100 point essay quiz on 2 completely different chapters. Not to mention he says play reviews should only be 1 and half - 2 pages, until you turn them in and he says they should be 3-4 pages.

Wes Bartlett is a great teacher. His teaching for a 100 level course though seemed tougher than most. His tests and quizzes are all essay with maybe one matching section. In my opinion, he makes a 100 level course harder than it has to be, but he definately knows his stuff. He'd be a great teacher for upper-level theater/acting classes. The class was not boring, but he let a lot of things slip by that most professors don't put up with at all. He let a large group of people turn in a major paper a day late. If you are looking for the easy theater appreciation class for gen. ed., this is not it.
