A&P is a hard class no matter what teach you take. I really liked Stokes. He is really smart and knows what he is talking about. The only downside to this class is that he only has one test which is the final. He has quizzes for every chapter that are online and pretty difficult (even being online). You only get 5 or 6 minutes for each quiz and they have 10 to 20 questions. you don't have time to look up the answers or anything like that. He just talks the whole lecture but he's nice and tries to make the material interesting. I would recommend him for A&P.

I really do reccomend this professor because he's an easygoing guy and he does get mad at some stuff that people do but he just dismisses class early. He dismisses class early alot and then some days just decides not to have class. You do have to study alot for this class alot though but all the quizzes and are online which makes it easier. And he gave us 3 days to take our quizzes up to three times. I really did like this professor.

Dr. Stokes is an arrogant jerk. He is extremely intelligent and knows what he is talking about but he uses that as a weapon against his students. He thinks that just because he didn't make good grades in college, no one else should. He sets you up to fail. He decided to add three more chapters to our final on a Thursday when the final was Monday at 8 am. He expects you to know the most minute details when his tests cover a very large amount of material. His tests are extremely difficult, way too hard for a 100 level course. Even if this class is required for your major, DO NOT take it unless you don't care about your GPA or maintaining a scholarship.

This course was not that bad, until the end. He does not require you to attend. However, toward the end he gets mad (even though it isnt required!) and starts giving extra credit out in class. It isnt fair to do that if class isnt mandatory. All notes, quizzes and final are online, so there is no need to go to class. He does not give people to chance to ask questions he just zooms threw the material. He also NEVER cancels class. He even comes if he is flooded in his home! He has a boat that he takes to get to the road! Dedicated! But he isnt a very good teacher.

Mr. Stokes is a very intelligent teacher he is willing to explain anything and he truly enjoys teaching. The class can be really boring at times. All power points and notes are put up on blackboard I would suggest printing out the power point before coming to class. All of his quizzes are online you get 72 hours to take them and 3 chances but only your last score counts rather you did better or worse which is great just don't forget to take the quiz. His final is cumulative but it is also online. Going to class is not mandatory but as the class size dwindles down he will randomly give out extra credit so it can help to go.

I would not recommend Stokes for anatomy. He does not do a good job of explaining any of the material. He does post all the lecture notes on blackboard although they really dont help on the quizzes, but neither do his lectures. There is a quiz after each chapter worth 10 points then a 100 point final.

Hardest class I've ever taken. Stokes isn't the worst teacher ever but he the material for this class can get very boring. He will spend multiple days going over taxonomy of rodents so if you're not into taxonomy and classifications absolutely DO NOT attempt this class. The final was killer and the midterm was even worse. He's not much on really teaching as much as just talking so it requires multiple hours of study. Just be warned that this class is truely the hardest class in the bio dept.

As a fourth year biology major I can say this. Mammalogy lives up to being the hardest Biology class in the department. Stokes however is awesome, he isn't emotional but he is witty and VERY intelligent. The course consists of a midterm which is brutal and a easier final. Then you have a paper to write and you must construct a full dichotomous key of all ky mammals. The key alone is 15 hours of of work (literally it took me that long). The only downside to Stokes is that he only cares about research and isnt into teaching, so a grade means nothing to him. Expect the biggest challenged of your biological career.

Let me start by saying this man is a great guy, he knows his stuff and will test you daily. This is known among all biology majors to be the HARDEST course among the entire biology program. So advice, dont walk in expecting a cake walk or something kind of hard. YOU WILL BE BROKEN. The class requires you to learn well over 500 mammal names (species, genera, family, order, etc.) The exams are a combination of odd questions that are intense. He expects you to know all details. He is straight forward and a great teacher. Most consider it success to get a D on a exam. FYI there are four grades: two exams 100pts each and two practicals 50pts each. I suggest to only those biology majors who are into zoology and can put forth two weeks of prior studying to a exam.

Dr. Stokes is very wise and knows a lot about his topics. He tends to lecture over slides and provide random facts to know. He is a very jolly guy with a dry sense of humor. The exams are all on the computer at the testing center and you get three attempts. The exams are 50 questions and arent too bad but you actually do have to study! The book is useful if you wanna study your book and not just his notes but if not you don't even need it. Overall: B teacher

Dr. Stokes is a good teacher but this class is hard...then again any A&P class is going to be hard. His tests are taken at the testing center, and you may take them up to 3 times. The catch is that he keeps the most recent grade, not your highest. Attendance is not mandatory, but I suggest going to class. He posts notes online but there is quite a bit that he goes over in class that is not on his notes. You do not need a book, but it helps...ALOT. Study hard...and good luck!

I love biology and liked Dr. Stokes. But this course rquired to much outside of class time. If you want an A or B you have to take class notes, go to class, read the chapters on your own and take notes off that as well. Basically read your ass off, hes a good man though. Tests are 50 questions, online and can be taken three times.

First off, Dr. Stokes is an awesome teacher. This was my first biology course coming in to college and I hadn't had Biology since my Sophomore year of high school so I was a bit nervous, especially when I found out the only grades were a midterm, final, and a paper. Yet, I thoroughly enjoyed the lectures we covered and I feel like I learned biology really, really well. The tests were fairly difficult, and he offers no study guides, but this just makes you study even harder. Dr. Stokes is an extremely nice guy and he was always willing to help you out before or after class. I highly recommend taking this class.

Be prepared to STUDY STUDY STUDY to take this course as with any A&P course! If you're looking for an easy teacher to take, you're not going to find an easy A&P course. I thought Stokes was a great teacher, there were days that because not many showed up he gave us extra credit quizzes over what we were going over. He started giving us the tests in the testing center which allowed you to improve your grade up to 3 times, and they were multiple choice which is always a plus. He also puts the notes online so it is easier to keep up in class. The best advice I can give is to devote your time to this course if you want to pass, many people fail this course because they don't devote the time to study or go to class. Good Luck!

OK for all you people that think this guy is a hard teacher you are idiots!!! *** HE GIVES YOU OLD TESTS TO STUDY AND THAT IS 95% OF THE TEST!!!!!!***** I have been to class 5-6 times all year. And I am pulling off a mid- A with no problem. The lab is harder than the lecture. Maybe people say this class is difficult b/c they are only nursing majors with no common sense.... But if you are half as smart as a rock you will do fine. BTW you can retake one test on the day of the final and attendence is definately NOT required, extra credit on every test of 3 questions ((roughly about 6%))- I will say Stokes has a negative disposition when you talk to him--- If you need help he will make you feel mildly retarded.

If you come to class you will do fine, plus he posts his notes on the internet and gives you old tests to study from.

Dr. Stokes seemed like a really nice guy, but the class is a killer. (TONS of material covered in the short time I was there.) I did not realize how difficult the class was going to be until it was too late. I suggest taking the class when you have no other classes (summer?!?!). The class requires consistent studying and with other classes that are equally as important that becomes a problem. The lab was the worst part! First of all, they (teachers) are not that organized in the lab, so it really leaves a lot up to you to understand and digest the material independently. Like I said, take it when you have plenty of time to only think about the task at hand.
Good Luck!!

The class isn't that hard at all. You don't need your textbook because all of the notes are posted on the internet and his tests come right from those notes. He puts a few diagrams on the tests where you have to match...for that just go to your lab book and go over the section you're looking at; they're the same pictures in the lab book as the reg. book. I went to class fairly regularly...maybe missed about 8 or 9 and I still kicked out an A in the class. You have 5 tests, counting the final which is just like a regular test, and he drops the lowest grade, that's what helped me keep my grade up. Print the notes out, read over them pretty well before a test and you'll be set. It's not as bad as they say.

The guy is nothing but an errupting volcano of hair! It's coming out of his freakin' ears. I might also add that it was sooo cold, that students had developed pulmonary edema by the time they got from their dorm room to the top of the hill, and here he comes in wearing sandals and a Hawaiian shirt! He is a smart a$$, he makes you feel like a retard for asking a question, you come out of class with carpal tunnel for writing so many notes, and God forbid your cell phone goes off, because he will immediately crucify you, and did I mention that he was a smart a$$? Dr. Stokes is primarily used to teaching upper level courses and it shows. This class should be fairly easy, but with Dr. Stokes flying through 3-4 lengthy chapters per week (too fast to take notes, better bring a highlighter and your book) it is a class that is almost impossible to pass. On every test our class took, the class average was always well below failing. That should tell you something.

Very little curve. Stokes demands that you know way to much information for an intro class. No study guieds or practice test are available, no matter how much you beg. I was told by other instructors that the best way to pass bio 120 is with Browker or Phillips definately not Stokes. Although this was his first time teaching this class, he just demands way to much.

I took Biology in high school and got an A, THIS CLASS IS SO HARD! There is way too much information and his tests are killers! If you don't HAVE TO take this class, take an easier one, otherwise you'll regret it.

This class sucked Hardcore. The tests were IMPOSSIBLE, too many notes and sections combined for each test. Way too much to learn at a time.
I dont recommend this one.

This class has been one of the easiest classes I've taken here at Western. If you're a person that came to college to study then you should do just fine. A good tip is to study from the test he puts online. The questions on the exam are basically the same. If you're a nursing major and your goal in this class is to get a C, I personally wouldn't want you as a nurse, because it's not that hard to make an A.

Dr. Stokes is an okay guy, he just is there for the job not the students. his tests are impossible, but the class is impossible. the lab is really bad too. i hate it and wish i would have never walked in that class. it's TONS of information. My brain feels swollen every time i leave the class.

Stokes lectures well, but his tests are ridiculously hard. Take Mason or Crawford instead.
