If there is another professor teaching Math 116, take them instead. Dr. Lanphier was merely an OK professor. He knows his math, but there were times where the class had to correct him on simple things like addition and subtraction. He picks up a piece of chalk in the beginning of class, and just goes with it. He's kind of awkward in front of the class, and even more so when you ask him a question. He gives a lot of quizzes, but only factors your top ten quiz grades into your final grade.

Lanphier does not know how to teach a lower level math course. All of the students in the class would be completely lost and he would just keep writing on the board. He would walk into class, start writing on the board, and then not stop until class was over. He never assigned any homework but that was the downfall. He didn't teach us how to do anything at all. I've never done this badly in a math class before. Unless you're really good at math and like learning it on your own, do not take his class.

I've had Dr. Panphier for multiple math classes. He was very fair in his grading and was overall extremely helpful.
One of the things I like most about Dr. Lanphier is that he boils everything down into its simplest terms. He also is very fair in grading (an A in both the math classes I had with him was an 85 of above).
Great teacher, very fair, very nice.

I personally thought this course was very easy. Lanphier is kinda quirky, but he's good teacher. He writes EVERYTHING he says on the board, so if your into that, you're in luck. You take one or two 10-point quizes every week, but he only counts the 10 highest. So it's not very hard to have a 100% quiz average. Plus, if you fail or miss a quiz, it's no big deal. I would definitely reccomend Lanphier for Math 117.

Lanphier is a good professor! I suck at math and when I first heard that I had to take Calculus, I freaked out! But with Lanphier, he explained the coursework thoroughly and made the problems seem easy. I rarely had to go to the math lab, because of how well he broke down the math problems. Overall, this class wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. He curved all of the tests and we had 15 quizzes and he drops your lowest 5. Overall, a very good and effective professor who I would recommend to those who are god awful in math.

Dr. Lanphier is probably one of the most intelligent people I know. The problem is that he knows what he is talking about and does not know how to teach it to a class. He is almost too smart for his own good. When the class starts he begins to write furiously on the board and doesn't stop until the end. This is bad because he is starting a new problem when you are still writing the old one. He will answer questions but does not explain well. The quizes are frequent, and he will warn you about them ahead of time, but they are sometimes difficult. There are four big tests including the final.

This teacher was by far the worst Math teacher I think could possibly be employed at Western. Although he has his PhD, he is an idiot when it comes to actual instruction. He skips around with all the notes students take, he confuses everyone(INCLUDING himself), and he is awkward around people. Don't ask him questions because he gets weirded out by confrontation. If you are bad at Math, which a lot are, DO NOT TAKE HIM, if you're good and can basically teach yourself, go ahead and have a laugh-because you definetly will.

This class is easy to pass as long as you take notes and pay attention. There were quizzes at least once a week, but some were dropped at the end.

Mr. Lanphier is probably the worst Math teacher I have ever had. Although you can tell he knows Math more than anyone I've ever had, he CANNOT TEACH!!!! He gets confused when working out problems with strategies to make it easier for students, but ends up just confusing you even more. He SUCKS at teaching sooo much, and I'm very good at Math, but am getting low grades because he can't teach at all. I had to teach myself out of the book. He sucks, DON'T TAKE HIM

Dr. Lanphier could be a good professor if he wasn't so nervous around his students. He's skips around alot and doesn't come to class prepared. I like structure something to follow by during lecture, he makes up problems then they don't work out, a page of notes later he realizes this. He is very hard to follow because he works so quickly. He'll put a problem on the board and before you are finished writing that, he's already answered it. Don't take him if you don't have to.

Dr. Lanphier is a good teacher, but you must stay with him. He picks up a piece of chalk as soon as he walks in the classroom and doesn't put it down until class is over. If you stay with him, the class is cake.

I consider myself, and not proudly so, to be a veteran of Calculus 122. I withdrew once, failed the next time, and then turned around and aced it. But don't think the A is all of my doing, because without Lanphier I wouldn't be where I am today, wherever that is.
Seriously though, if you have to take the grueling class that is 122 then take Lanphier. I am not saying the class is easy, but I've never had better. First of all, the exam is only cumulative because math in general is, so don't worry. On top of that, he curves, and that curve could change your 75 into an A, and has a tendency too. Plus, after 10 or so quiz grades he will drop the lowest grades, (a drop for every quiz taken over 10 quizzes).
On a more personal level, he's easy to get along with and will try to help you out as much as possible. That means if he’s going to fast, slow him down for a question whenever, and I mean whenever you need too. Because the book is worthless in my opinion (three semesters, same book) and Lanphier is your only teaching tool (plus math lab, which I did not need this year).
Simply put, I probably owe a lot to Lanphier, because I had to take, and pass, this course for my major, and thanks to him, I did.

Dr. Lanphier has the ability to take a very hard course and make it passable. He expects his students to do homework (which you do not turn in) and communicate with him in and out of class as to any problem you may have with the material. Dr. Lanphier is a good instructor to take for any class, but especially the higher level classes.
He also would be a good one to work with for Math 498 if you are at that level.

Im pretty good at math, but I dont think this was a difficult class for anyone. I rarely came to class (few did). He gives like 16 or 17 quizzes only the top 10 count. His lectures are BORING!!!!! He writes absolutely everything he says down and Im not talkin shorthand he writes in complete sentences and takes FOREVER! the tests are 10 questions but he grades on steps not answers and I dont even think he checks the steps very well. I got 5 answers wrong on one test and the work that I showed was pretty much BS he just saw that I put something down... I got a 90 on it. He makes alot of mistakes while teaching.
Easy class, bad teacher.

Mr. Lanphier is a great math teacher and he is able to understand what the students want to know. He gives good every day examples to do in class. Homework is assigned at the beginning of the semseter, to go along with each section, not turned in. Exams are fair. Lots of short quizzes, however he only uses the top 10. Good Luck! If you take him, you'll have a nice semester.
