I loved this class. He takes the time to answer your questions and answers them thoroughly and will try any way of explaining until you understand the material. As long as you go to class and do the worksheets (as you should with any class) you'll do just fine.

Pesterfield is an ASS. Enough said. Do not take him if at all possible. I am a great student and can normally grasp concepts very easily but this man made class hell and I had to withdraw. Rumor has it that he didn't get into med school or something and purposefully wants students to fail in life like he did. (I don't know if its true but it wouldn't surprise me)
He walks in the first day of class and literally boasts about how many people fail his course.

Although I received an A in this class, I would not recommend Pesterfield to anyone! He is an inconsiderate and terrible man who cares nothing about his students. I actually think he enjoys making your life miserable. I had to miss for a very serious reason and he gave me a zero for that day and would not let me make it up at any time. I am surprised I was able to pull out an A. He is a jerk, simply said. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! He is a complete dick and not someone you want to work with.

I know there are many negative reviews about Dr. Pesterfield, but honestly I have never learned so much in any class except his. He teaches chemistry! and he does it well. He is always willing to help and if you put in the effort and try you can do well in this class. The tests are extremely difficult, but it's well worth it. I wouldn't recommend any other chemistry professor.

Dr. Pesterfield is the greatest teacher I have ever had. Every negative review he has probably came from someone who did not go to class/take notes/study. He explains the material in a way that a complete idiot could understand it. His tests are difficult but if you look over all his slides and do the homework, you will make an A. I made a 70 on the first test because I did not study enough and ended the semester with a 93 overall average after adjusting my study habits. He never asked a question on a test that he did not cover. Take this guy, especially if you are Pre-med/dent or anything that requires a standardized test. Dr. Pesterfield is the man.

I love Dr. Pesterfield but I had to audit the class because I didn't do so well on the first exam and I had some financial aid stuff I had to resolve. His class his extremely hard but it's not his fault, the department requires him to cover 12 chapters of chem in 12 weeks. If you take him PLEASE read the book and do the suggested homework, it WILL help you. He is always helpful during office hours.

Even though I complained about the class almost every day of the semester, I must say that Dr. Pesterfield is an amazing professor and I will be really shocked if I ever get a professor as good as him. With that being said, his class is very very very very difficult. He will take away the stress of maintaining 4.0 so that will be one less thing you have to worry about. :-) He takes easy material and makes it hard. His test were very short and the multiple choice answers sometimes went up to the letter H. If you missed one question you were automatically dropped one letter grade. Almost every test class average was in the D range or failing. Because of this we did get one quiz of extra credit worth 20 points. However, you had to work really hard to get those points because it was just as hard as his test. If you want to be really knowledgeable in chemistry (i.e. Chem major) or you are going into a pre-profession TAKE him because he will really help you in the long run.
His class offered PEER Sessions and I would highly recommend them too. They will help you.

Extra credit is like a blessing from above in this class. This class is a challenge. I worked my butt off for an A. Do NOT take this course lightly. If you've taken an AP Chemistry class before and understood things in there pretty well, then this course is definitely a refresher, but a CHALLENGING one. Dr. Pesterfield does genuinely care about helping students if you have a problem understanding and, while he can come across as being harsh in class, if you approach him afterwards or during his office hours, he is very nice and helpful. When you leave this class, you WILL know your chemistry. A challenge, but a good one. Take him if you are a chemistry major or in a pre-professional program.

The course itself is a challenging and difficult course. Pesterfield will meet with you outside of class to help you with things you don't understand. Attendance is not mandatory but it is incredibly encouraged. This class is almost like a math class where you have to go and practice what you learn. It takes alot of outside work. He has 6 quizzes, if you take all 6 your lowest grade counts towards extra credit. Pesterfield really wants you to succeed in this class, while there are alot of notes and sometimes it may seem like they just restate themselves, he tries to touch everyones learning styles. Plus the course just has a lot of information to go over.

In other words, if you could pass his class, you could pass anything! I absolutely LOVED him. I learned so much in his class and I liked the format of his quizzes/tests. He is the best professor I have ever had and I still go to him for help in my other chemistry classes. He really knows what he is talking about and is there to help you if u need it.

Dr. Pesterfield is by far the best professor I have had at Western. He really, really cares about his students and wants them to succeed in any field (in the sciences) that he/she chooses. However, he does this by challeging you, and testing you to see if you really want it. Do you really want to be a doctor, dentist, researcher, etc?
This class really puts you to the test, and gives you the idea of how the next few chemistry classes you are going to take are going to be...pretty hard, but not impossible.
This class is hard only because of all the material you have to absorb in such a short amount of time. However, if you spend AT LEAST an hour a day doing chemistry problems, copying notes, looking at old exams, you will be fine. But you have to look at chemistry everyday. Everyday. Everyday. (If I didn't say "everyday" enough...).
Dr. Pesterfield tells you in class and hints at what is going to be on the exams. Be mindful of that, and never be too shy or too proud to go ask him for help, because he loves questions and he wants to see people ask questions and succeed in his class. I went to his office hours everyday for the first two weeks and he never got tired of me, and he's more of a good friend and advisor rather than my "chemistry professor".
You can do it, it's going to be hard, but after the first few weeks, you'll be fine. I came out with above an A in the class (he had a 40 point extra quiz), and anyone can do that as long as you put the work in.
Good luck =)

Dr. Pesterfield is an amazing professor. He really knows his chemistry, and teaches in a way that is easy to understand. The class is difficult only because the content is difficult. But if you have a good chemistry background prior to taking the class, you will do much better. A lot of material is covered in a short amount of time. The class is pretty fast-paced, but if you need any help at all, Dr. P is very good about helping in any way he can. Study for the tests and you'll do well on them. All of the note powerpoints were online. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but missing class is ultimately detrimental to your test score. I suggest going to every single class. Dr. P likes to challenge you, but at the end of the class, you will feel like you learned a lot, especially beneficial if you are pursuing higher-level chemistry courses. Get to know Dr. P. He's a great guy, and wonderful to use as a reference! :)

Okay, pre-professional people, listen up. Dr. Pesterfield is by far, the best professor you can have if you want to be prepared for any graduate exam you need to take. He has written questions for the ACS exam, a national standardized test. He has written text books, he does Kaplan MCAT, PCAT classes. He knows what you need to know, and he knows how to teach it to you. The question is, are you willing to work roughly 2 hours everyday just strictly on chemistry? This class is very rewarding, but it is hard as hell.
For those of you who failed the class already and blamed it on him...it's not Pesterfield that made the class hard. It was the class itself. It covers 12 chapters of material...in 14 weeks. Basically, this means you cover a chapter a week. The class moves fast, and if you don't want to get ran over by the class, you have to keep up. Go to class, if not, you'll be very far behind.
Good luck
(By the way, I'm only half way through the class right now, but I have 100%).

Like many other people that took this class, I also had over a 4.0 in high school. This was literally the hardest class I have ever had. The first day of class he told us he didnt give many A's at all. He said he makes his class so hard because he wants us to succeed. If he wants us to succeed, then why was half the class failing before it was time to turn in audit forms halfway through the semester? Our class started out with 78 people in it and we ended the semester with 23. His tests were designed to trick you. I would never say that without actually feeling it was true. No matter how much we would all study, the class average for tests would always be around 65%. I was very happy to have a C (first ever) just to get out of his class. Although this class sucks, there really isn't much getting around him because he is the only one that teaches it. If anyway possible, avoid Pesterfield.

I came into college with a 4.1 GPA from high school. I have taken AP English, AP Biology, and AP Chemistry with getting a 95 or above in each class. With that being said, I came into Pesterfield's class thinking it would be challenging, but very helpful. I was wrong. The course provided material I had already learned from previous years. The downfall of the course is Pesterfield's tests. Not only are they outrageous, they are one of the few grades your receive. I received a 60 on the first test, while the class average was a 62. For the tests later on in the course, the average test scores stayed around the 60's. If you plan on going Pre-anything, I would advise taking someone else, or be ready to study atleast 10 hours a week(not counting class). If you are just taking Chem 120 and not going further in Chem, you can pass with a C, as long as you have good studying habits. I would advise everyone to take a different professor if possible, unless you like learning basic material, and getting blown away by material on tests that you don't recognize.

Dr. P was by far the hardest teacher i have ever had. While he knew the material VERY well, he moved VERY, VERY fast, and even when asked to slow down would end up moving just as fast before the period was over. Notes were INSANELY un-helpful, but was very helpful when gone to one-on-one. If you aren't able to either pick-up concepts on your own accord or learn from a teacher who moves very quickly, DON'T TAKE PESTERFIELD. The name should say it all.

First, let me say that this class is CRAZY HARD. It is intended to cover 12 chapters in the book, and Dr. Pesterfield moves very quickly to do this. I believe he said 1/3 of the class usually drops. Overall, I think Dr. Pesterfield explains concepts very well. He gives tons of practice problems and worksheets, and you MUST do them to do well in the class. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I would have killed myself if I ever missed a class because I would be so far behind. There are four tests throughout the year, plus a few quizzes, and some easy homework grades to help you out. The final at the end of the year is standardized, so it's a lot easier than his tests, but also very different from them. If you want to major or minor in chemistry, I highly recommend Dr. Pesterfield. But, if you just need 120 and no other chemistry classes, you might want a professor who isn't so tough.

Pesterfield has a bad rep but it is b/c people do not take the time to try. He comes off as a hard a** but he really cares and will help you whenever he can. He will explain problems in class and will not go on until everyone is comfortable. Yes his tests are from hades, but if you put forth the effort and try to understand the material and study it is very manageable. He has a great sesne of humor and even if you fail is class you will get some good laughs. He is awesome and I highly reccomend him if you want a challenge.

I would first suggest that if you are not a chemistry major DO NOT take him. He is very difficult and I unfortunately took him my first semester of college. He is very helpful outside of class, and was always willing to go step by step. Although, during class he flew through the material and didn't waste anytime moving to the next topic. Many things he would barely mention if at all were on the test, and would have been easy points, but I didn't even look at it. His quizzes are easy, but his test are very difficult. H/w, quizzes, and EC is how I got a B.

This has the reputation of being one of the toughest courses on campus, and with the toughest Chemistry teacher available. All above is true! This IS a very difficult class, but you shouldn't be surprised. Dr. Pesterfield is a great guy, he wants to help his students, and he wants everyone to succeed. That being said, you really need to base your schedule around this class, because it most likely will be your most stressful and time consuming one you will take! Give yourself plenty of time to study and work on your homework notebooks. There are four exams, and a final standardized exam. The exams will make you or break you. Also, there are sporadic quizzes in the class as well, so don't take them lightly.
The reason I gave him an OK instead of a GOOD was because I feel like that if I had to go back and change my professor for this course, I probably would. Everyone says he is too hard, and you are better off for your GPA's sake if you go ahead and take a different professor. But if you're up to the challenge, Pesterfield will teach you lots and you will learn a lot, preparing you for the rest of your Chemistry courses.

Chem 120 is hard no matter who you take it with, and myself, I'd prefer a good teacher for difficult material. Dr. Pesterfield IS a good teacher. He pushes and challenges you but if you don't actually learn the material you'll have serious trouble moving forward and if you're not continuing with chemistry why are you taking 120 anyway? I guess if the only chem you'll ever take is 120, then yeah, try to find someone who'll let you slide by, (doubt you'll find one though). But if you actually want to learn how to do some wicked hard but cool stuff, take Dr. Pesterfield.
P.S. DON'T SKIP CLASS. ... that's why my grade is...*cough* unspecified.

I've been reading other reviews of this guy, and I have to say that some of them are false. Yes, he is hard. Yes, if you fall behind in this class, you stay behind. No, there is little to no extra-credit. But his class isn't impossible, and you will LEARN the material if you are to pass. His lectures sometimes go above your head, but he always asks at the end of each section if anyone is confused about something. I've read that he doesn't help at all if you have questions, and this is completely false. I've been to his office several times to ask additional questions, and every time he has gladly answered them. Granted, he won't spoon feed it to you, but at the same time, he won't stop till you understand it. His class is definitely a weed-out class, we've had over half the class drop already, but the study skills that you learn from this class will help you to go on to do better in upper level courses. Bottom line, if you're looking for an easy class to bull your way through to get some chem credit out of the way, you will die. If you're a chem major or minor looking for a challenging class that will help you in the future, this class is for you.

Dr. Pesterfield challenges students to rise above a high school level of chemistry. He presents a difficult topic that requires work to understand--you will need to think and study. In return, Dr. Pesterfield will give you a great foundation for the next chemistry classes, especially helpful for the chem majors and pre-pharm and med students. If you are in search of a class that you can sail through simply by attending class, chemistry classes probably aren't for you to begin with, much less the challenges that Doctor Pesterfield will hand you.

Don't take Pesterfield if you aren't going into the Chemistry field. Dr. Pesterfield is a teacher who definitely knows his material very well; so well that he often blitzes through material faster than can be thoroughly comprehended. I was a 4.0 student in high school and, as can be seen, this class pushed the boundary. He demands a lot of out-of-class time spent studying, but the time spent is not rewarded as tests are a horrid compilation of the most-missed questions from previous exams. He really does want his students to get between a 50% and a 70% in the class. Watch out: unless you have a passion for Chemistry or you are a cute girl, you will stuggle in this class.

So all you 120 people seem to have a problem with Pesterfield...I guess this is the first time in your lives you've had to use your brains a little. First of all, I think a 116, 120, whatever lower level chemistry class you take should be really HARD. This is so you can determine early on if you have what it takes to make it in chemistry (it really is for your own good). Why? Because later on it gets impossibly hard for some upperclassmen and they have to pick another major and have all those other hours wasted. And what about all you pre-professional students crying? Do I really want my future doctor to complain because a chemistry class was hard? Give me a break! I appreciate the torture I took for inorganic because I actually understand some chemistry now and I wish I had taken him for lower level courses! Dr. Pesterfield really is available and extremly helpful if you are having a hard time so use his office hours! So for all you cry babies maybe you should change to a cake major or just drop out of college all together (burger king is hiring). Otherwise, chemistry is hard so get over it.

i dont know where to even start when it comes to this man. on the first day of classes he warns everyone that he is the devil...seriously. when students ask questions most of the time he gives a "stupid look" to them. especially when a wrong answer is given or nobody even answers at all. he has no patience and isnt very willing to help if you are having trouble with the class. of course he likes the students the are very smart, but gets very easily aggrivated with those who are not. i will never take another couse by this man and i would absolutely NEVER recommend him to any student who doesnt want to fail. the tests are not a reflection of your knowledge of chemistry. he provides a cd for 10 dollars that has practice exams and problems but there is one major problem with this...they have NOTHING to do with the tests he gives. i think he likes to rip people off to make a profit. its like he wants his students to have a hard time. i can understand the fact that a teacher wants to push their students to study and learn to have proper time management, but he way over does this. its as if he gets joy out of seeing us all fail. the average score of our first 3 exams hasnt been over a 60%, if that tells you anything and this was with at least 150 students. all in all this guy is pretty much a jerk, he knows his stuff but doesnt want anyone else to understand. TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR!! thank you and good-bye.

I hate this man. He is a complete as*hole and doesnt deserve to teach an introductory class. If you dont learn every rule and every exception to them for any concept, you will fail. He only tries to trick you and expects you to be an expert on a topic, even if he only said a few words in class about it.
What really pisses me off is that there is another Chemistry class where everyone has A's. What do you think Med School looks at... your GPA, or how hard you tried?
GPA.. of course, so those people in the easier class dont have to try, but will look much better on paper then anyone in his class.
Also, the whole as*hole part... if you dont know something, you are a moron in his book. Dont even try to ask him a question because you will get shot down. Even during his office hours he is angry if you come see him to ask him a question... total douche bag.
I read all the evals on him before taking him, and was stupid enough to believe the nice ones. He's terrible. If you care at all about your GPA, take anyone else if you are not already a master at Chemistry.

Where do I start? I loved Chemistry until this class, it was my favorite subject! I took 116 with Williams and understood everything; passed with a high A. Pesterfield took any interest I had in Chemistry and threw it on the ground. Trust me, I understand this material is hard..but it's not impossible. (With this guy it is!) He always asks the class if there are any questions, when someone asks one he rolls his eyes, sighs very loud, and tilts his head back as if he were saying "C'mon, are you serious?" His tests are from the devil, he told us he was Satan on the first day and he isn't kidding. This guy is good at Chem but doesn't know the FIRST thing about teaching and HELPING students when they need it. If you need help, look elsewhere because you WON'T get it from this joker.

Lester AKA Satan is the hardest teacher I have ever taken a class with. He is impossible if you dont want to spend hours and hours studying dont take him. He tries to trick you and wants you to fail. After the first test he told people to go home and reconsider their majors, and if they were dedicated enough to try hard. I guess hes weeding out all the Pre-Med and Pre-professional students and hes doing a good job at it. I havent had much Chemistry so I guess its good that I get caught up before other harder classes so that is the onlythin he is good for. Otherwise... he is very very hard.

When you do ask questions, his response tends to be "I can't believe you don't know that!" He is an ass! The homework, cake, the quizzes, okay, the test, HELL! That is no lie! You will understand his notes and any in-class problems but then when you get the test....it's a whole other story! One of our exams was nine pages long!! I will NEVER take this man again, EVER! Contrary to what many students may say about Dr. Pesterfield, he is definetly the best chemistry teacher I have ever had. Not only does he explain new concepts clearly and wants you to have a thorough understanding of the material, but he is there after class to help you. A group of students in my class stayed afterwards and worked with him every day. The class is difficult, but the students who do not do well either don't study, come to class, or try to seek his help until it's too late. Also, work the problems that he gives you for extra credit (the notebook), usually a problem from them shows up on the tests. And the final is comprehensive over Chem 120 and Chem 220.

Pesterfeild is a great teacher. He does everything he can to help you get the grade you want. He offers 40 extra credit points through a notebook, holds study sessions on Sundays, and is open to help. The only thing negative about this class is that exams are at night...it's a pain if you have a night class and need to reschedule. The class isn't the easiest but for me it didn''t require the 2 hrs a day of study-be prepared for the exams though. You can't fly through the class but it's possible to come out of there with a high A. I did it and I'm not a chem major.

Pesterfield is the man! He always has time to help students. I'm not sure what all these other evaluations are saying when he laughed at students questions. He stayed to help me after EVERY SINGLE CLASS. In fact, it was like we had two class sessions everyday (which was extremely helpful.) If you don't study for at least 2-3 hours a day, you have NO chance passing this class- no matter who you take. There are three tests, four quizzes, and the ACS final. He also gives everyone 40 bonus points if you do the problems he assigns. 40 points! That's an entire letter grade! TAKE PESTERFIELD!

Dr. Pesterfield really knows what he's talking about but I found him to be unnecessarily hard. He graded labs very hard and I lost so many points from labs that I worked hard on and thought I had done well on because they're was a "systematic error" according to Pesterfield. He is a friendly guy and he will help if you ask, but students in other labs were graded a lot easier. His exams are the only light at the end of the tunnel. He tells you exactly what you will be tested over, so if you know how to do the calculations you'll do well on exams. Take him if you have to, but be prepared to work at it.

Eventhough Chem 222 is a hard course, pesterfield takes some kind of screwed up pleasure out of watching his students fail. I have honestly never had this much trouble with a class and I have always done well oin school. If you don't study for the test, you're going to fail anyway but he feels it necessary to fail you even if you did study. He says he is willing to help but he goes psycho when you ask a question. His test are nothing like what you cover in class (the first class average was a 52 and the sencond was like a 59) and he carried around a screwdriver during a test to be "funny". He is an extremely arrogant professor (if you want to call him that) and I would not wish anyone to have to take him.

Pesterfield will present a challenging course-- you will be expected to make sense of some concepts by doing the book problems he suggests. He lets you turn in the answers to the problems for extra credit though. He knows his chemistry and really will try to get you to like it as well. He has a good open door policy and takes questions well both during lecture and outside of class. Pre-professional and chem majors should really take him, since you will be expected to learn these chemistry concepts, and Pesterfield makes you learn them instead of just spitting them up for an exam.

I'm going to give it to you straight; Chem 222 is hard no matter who you take. If you can't handle it, you should change majors. Pesterfield is an amazing teacher. He focuses on working problems in class. He has a problem set notebook that is worth 40 points. There are three tests, plus the ACS as a final. Study at least two hours a day. If you cant dedicate two hours a day to study chemistry, don't take this class and make sure you change your major.

Dr. Pesterfield is a really great teacher. He cares about the students that he is teaching and is willing to work with you outside of class ~ at a time that is convienient for you, providing it's not at 3:00 in the morning. His tests are hard, but really make you feel good when you do well on them. They are one of the biggest challenges that you will ever have to face while in college. Attendance is no mandatory, and you don't have to take notes, unless you want to pass. And there is not a professor anywhere that is more into his subject. If you don't mind putting in a little extra effort into preparing for tests, and you really want to learn chemistry, I would recommend Pesterfield. You just can't help but learn in his class!

Chemistry is a hard subject for anyone. Dr. Pesterfield just makes sure that you know what you are doing. Yes he is a hard teacher, but you got to keep in mind that the final for 222 is standardized and you need a teacher who is going to be hard in order to do well. I admit that he does not show any mercy what-so-ever. Go into this course with a positive attitude and get to know him and learn how is tests are going to be. Once you have mastered that, you will do fine. His tests are extremely tricky yet that's how he teaches. His questions are ALL application and problem solving, but so are all of the other chemistry teacher's, so get used to it. Just be ready for anything. I recommend him. I barely made a C in 120 and I am still taking him for 222, that's how much I enjoyed him. Besides, his class filled up WAY before the others did, so that just tells you that other people want him as well.

His class is so incredibly fast paced it is scary. his notes are a shady and incomplete. the sylabus requires a MINIMUM of 2.5 hours of study after EACH class period. He prides his fact that his tests are a "mental enima" as described by his students. class test averages are 65%, no extra credit, no curve. i am an honors student with a 3.9gpa, his class makes me feel dumb, and when i ask questions he WILL give you a tinge of attitude and it does make you even more confused. Take him if you really want to learn what entails an AUDIT or a dropped course. take someone else that doesnt throw curve balls on their tests. oh and the tests take around 2.5 hours, he has to rent out an auditorium. they dont do that in other classes. Dr Pesterfield is with out a doubt the best Chemistry teacher in Western's Program. If you have any choice at all which Professor to take, take him. He doesn't ramble and is open to questions. He's younger than most of the chemistry professors and is better equipped at teaching at a student's level.
He'll try to scare you the first day, and the class may seem hard at first. But when you look back on it you realize how easy everything you did really was.
The class deals with stoichiometry(converstion factors), atom make up, gas laws, and orbital shapes. I advise any science majors to take it their first semester.
Course 222 College Chemistry II uses the same book and lab book as 120. Also the final for 222 is cumulative over both 120 and 222, so save all of you notes.

Once again, I have to say that Dr. Pesterfield is the man!! While other people were whining about how much their seminar sucked, we were having a great time. This class is required, so try to get someone as cool as Dr. Pesterfield.

This course is excellent, especially when Dr. Pesterfield is teaching it. If you have any chemistry knowledge, this is the class for you, but if you don't, you may want to take a lower level chemistry course first. Do whatever you can to take Dr. Pesterfield. Les is the man!!!!

Dr. Pesterfield is the GREATEST! I would recommend his lectures/labs to anyone considering a chemistry major/minor. Pesterfield does a wonderful job of getting his class involved and excited about chemistry. His lectures are very complete and he is extremely helpful.
