I have posted a previous review about Dr. Dahl. I enjoyed having him for CHEM 120 so much that I decided to take him for CHEM 222. Our class only had around 35 people, so it was small and personable. Anyone could speak up in class without judgement, and Dr. Dahl took the time to explain things thoroughly. I took this class with a couple friends (one friend took it with me because he/she isn't the best at chemistry). Sadly, this friends failed the class altogether and wanted to blame Dahl even though this student would come into class every morning and do Spanish homework. I took around 65 pages of notes for this class only using the front sides of notebook paper. I highly recommend color-coding notes, highlighting, and the sorts. Dahl provides a practice exam or two before each exam. Work through those; they will be your saving grace because they are extremely similar to the actual tests. He has taken questions straight from our practice exams and put them in the actual exam. Like I said in my last review of Dahl, people who perform poorly in his class are the ones who skip class, don't bother putting the time in to study, or do Spanish homework when they do come to class (sorry, not sorry). If I could stress a few things: GO TO CLASS, study the practice exams, go to office hours, and don't do homework for other classes during chemistry.

I came into Dr. Dahl's class expecting it to be much worse than what I had in high school. This wasn't the case at all. In our lecture, we had over 100 people, so this is probably why the tests were strictly multiple choice. He would give extra credit problems in class (especially on Fridays when half the class skipped) as well as on the test. Each test was 25 multiple choice questions that may require some calculations and the 26th multiple choice question was extra credit. Most people who give Dahl poor reviews are the ones who don't want to put in effort and expect a good grade to fall out of the sky. Study, do the homework, take QUALITY notes. If you don't understand something, utilize the online textbook (you can buy the hard copy off of Amazon for around $50) and/or go to his office hours.

Analytical chemistry at WKU is probably the weed out class. It will make or break you. There are so many people who have had "A's" or "B's" in their chemistry classes (and had easy, joke professors)--and once they get to Dr. Dahl, the world caves in on them because they've never really had to work for a grade. Analytical chemistry with Dr. Dahl will teach you to think like a chemist, and you have to or you will fail the lab portion, and it will kick your butt. If you've had Dahl or Pesterfield before, and have done well, you will be fine. If you've had Conte, Snyder, Webb...prepare to work.
Dr. Dahl is a professor who is so willing to help, but it is up to the students to go to office hours and class to do well. He is the nicest man in the world and knows the ins and outs of the class. His lectures can be a little disorienting, but the "answer" is not so important as the concept.
Final note:
If you miss class multiple times, don't bother trying to make an A or a B.

Dr. Dahl is a great professor and great guy. His tests can just be so damn difficult. I personally feel that they are more so than Dr. Pesterfield's, Dr. Dahl is just better with the partial credit.
Anyway, thanks to Dr. Dahl, I felt like a chemist for the first time in my college career. The labs are well constructed and give a true understanding of the course material. Dr. Dahl does an excellent job covering material for both lab and lecture and will sometimes use the more difficult suggest homework problems from the book as exam questions.
This was probably my favorite chemistry class due to (1) the challenge and (2) the precision and accuracy required. I had a different professor for CHEM 222 (I practically slept and received an A) and went immediately into Quant with Dr. Dahl. I studied twice as much to learn all the material required from CHEM 222 in addition to the new quant material. Save yourself some trouble and take either Dahl or Pesterfield for CHEM 222, but definitely take Dr. Dahl for CHEM 330.

Dr. Dahl is a terrible teacher. It seemed like his main goal was to trick you on exams and quizzes. He'd tell you in class that if you understood this, then you'd be fine on the exam/quiz. One instance occurred on a quiz where he literally said the quiz is just like this sheet and when the quiz was handed out, it wasn't comparable. I'd advise you to take another teacher if possible.

Professor Dahl is no where near a bad person and maybe not that bad of a teacher... The only problem i had was the way he teached i never understood what he was talking about but the bad part is his TEST! No Lie they are extremely hard... The First month of class was the same stuff i did in Chem 116 ( which I got a B+ in) and i made a 57 on his exam with extreme studying... The reason i got a D was because after i knew i couldn't pass his exam knowing the material there was no sense in even trying anymore... So Good Luck to you all that take him and remember he's not a horrible teacher he just didn't suit me and he may not suit you either

Dahl is a terrible teacher. Nice guy, can't express an idea to his class to save himself. He is utterly unhelpful and loves tricking his students. He doesn't care at all if you understand the material and seems to enjoy failing students and laughing at them when they try to ask why. (true story). I hated this class and i'm so glad i'll never see dahl again.
I would rather lay down in garbage and have golf balls poured on me while a fire raged around me then ever take a class of his again. PHUK DAHL

His tests are hard and unforgiving and he likes to throw in questions over material never covered. I got a B in this class purely by studying all the time. Don't be fooled by anything he says to you, this class is near impossible to pass

Dr. Dahl is a GREAT teacher. I really gained a lot of practical chemistry knowledge from his course. However, Do NOT expect him to spoon feed you anything. Know how to work the homework problems he assigns inside and out. Also be able to work the problems that are in your notes. Be diligent in your lab work because it will help your overall grade. Also the ACS final is easier than his tests. Dahl is a great teacher, but you will work your butt off!

Dr. Dahl sometimes expects you to have a lot of previous knowledge of chemistry. He explains things quickly and expects you to grasp it the very first time. If you don't understand it then you can go to his office, but a lot of time he will just tell you to work the practice problems. He gives a lot of review questions for you to work through and expects you to do them all. Sometimes you can get him to explain them, and sometimes he tells you to try and figure them out on your own and work a little bit harder. He is very understanding though and gives extra credit every so often, so I wouldn't miss class too much if I were you.

Dr. Dahl is an amazing teacher, I feel that he really brings it down to your level. Don't misunderstand me, he EXPECTS you to work hard, and EXPECTS you to have an understanding of the material. You can't just go through the motions in this class, but you will learn it which will benefit you if you are taking the DAT, MCAT etc. I highly encourage you to take Dr. Dahl, he is more than willing to help, and his door is always open. He really wants you to do well. I actually enjoyed going to his class!

Dahl is awesome! He is hilarious and keeps you interested throught the whole class. He's got a great sense of humor too which is quite uncommon for a professor. He's really layed back and wears Hawaiin shirts every week. If you need extra help he is MORE than willing to help you and you won't think twice about going to his office. (<--Write that down Pesterfield) I got a C because I suck at math and that's pretty much all 120/222 is. Only draw back with Dahl is he doesn't write too much stuff on the board and he tends to talk things out alot, but if ask him to write it on the board he doesnt mind at all. Overall it was a great class and Dahl is awesome.

Dr. Dahl is an amazingly nice guy. He'll help you if you need help in lecture, but he's not so amazing at helping in lab. I've missed points on lab reports and I still don't know what for. He's very picky about how you present things to him. If you ask a question about something in lab, he won't give you a straight answer, but he'll lead you in a way so you can infer what you need to know.

Outside of the classroom I think Dr. Dahl is a great person. But because the information he is teaching is so easy for him I think he makes the course much more difficult than it needs to be. He presents it as if all of the problems can be solved using only common sense and all you need to do is think about it. In my opinion, the only reason I even passed the class was because my book and solutions guide was attached to me all semester long. I did nothing but study for this class all the time. It's not the fact that the material was even that hard, it was because he was not a good teacher.

While Dr. Dahl is a cool guy, he sucks as a professor. He teaches at light speed and it is hard to keep up with him. He always says, "I'm known for covering material pretty quick, so slow me down." I would think if I were a professor and I knew of some way I could help my students out I would do it. But not Dr. Dahl. He's been saying this for years (I had him for quant two years ago.) Please stay away from Dahl as much as possible. Instrumental Analysis is kind of hard to keep up with anyways because you don't get to directly work with the instrumentation. This is my first "C" in chemistry--i have always made A's and B's.

This class was pretty poor. Dr. Dahl was not a bad teacher, but he put several questions on his tests that I would call trick questions. Also, a number of the test material was never covered in class and the homework was graded poorly. He would give a ten point grade on homework that would be almost 50 or 60 questions. You miss one or two and lose 20% on the homework grade.

This lab was more difficult than my 121 lab, but it wasn't too bad. We only had 2 tests, the rest of the grade came from lab reports, questions, and prelabs. Dahl is pretty picky on reports about units and other things. It's a good thing that most of the grade came from the labs, though, because the tests were difficult. He puts surprises on there and makes them worth 10 or 15 pts! He does give partial credit. He's a nice person and easy to get along with.

Please do not take Dr. Dahl! I beg you for your GPA! Dahl is a nice guy, but he cannot teach. He throws stuff on the exams you have literally never seen before, and expects you to be able to do extremely difficult problems with only the very simple examples he gives in class!! The book was completely useless, as it was different from his lecture. Our class average on the first test was in the mid 60's and the second test average was a 55!!! He actually went back and gave a 10 quiz on material to add to our test grade because the test was so bad!! The quiz did not help out that much. At the current time, Dr. Dahl is the only professor who teaches Quan. His notes from class are very little (how do you study without notes?) and he doesn't write out things very well when he does give notes. My Chem average until now was an A. Hopefully I can pull out a B from this class.

Dr. Dahl is a nice guy and everything, however he lacks the ability to teach his material in a way that the students can understand. You can tell he is super smart, but he has trouble alot getting his students to understand what he is talking about. That wouldn't be so bad however, because you can usually do good when a professor teaches bad if you invest alot of time into book study etc. Not so with Dahl. The notes he gives in class are different from what the book says (by the way, the book is also unclear in many respects) which are different from the tests he gives. He gives the simplest examples in class then expects you not only to be able to do the reverse of them, but then puts very difficult questions on the test and includes things that he never went over in lecture. Something has to be wrong when the average of the first test is a 63%!!! Lab is the thing which will save your grade--it is 40% of the class!

He knows his subject very well, but he doesn't know the first thing about explaining it to others. His tests consist, for the most part, of questions you have never seen before, even if you do the homework. I would advise taking someone else for this course if at all possible.

He covers a lot of material, although the only grades in this class are tests which do not effectivly measure what material you learn. The test questions are very difficult and tricky, he even says so. Yet his final was suprisingly more straight-forward. The average on most tests are a 50/70. I missed an A by merely a few points and he wouldn't give me an A. This was my first B in college, thanks Dr. Dahl.

Dr. Dahl was horrible! He's the hardest professor in the Chemistry Department. Avoid him at all costs!! His tests don't hardly follow his notes. He's not much help out of class. His sarcasm could be spared. I dreaded the class!!

Dr. Dahl is a very nice person, but he doesn't lecture over the same material as he tests over. He also tends to say things in a confusing way or say something completely wrong in lecture and never correct it to the entire class before a test. Avoid taking him for 120 if at all possible.

It seems as though Dr. Dahl talks over a student's head so that the student MUST see him outside of class.
