You do have to read to pass his class! There is a short quiz EVERY class period. He does provide for extra credit based on several criteria. He is super nice, go to his office and he will always talk to you. He is kind of arrogant at times, and at the beginning he will make it sound like his class will KILL YOU! It WONT! He just likes to intimidate you! :) The tests are ESSAYS...buy bluebooks! There are a few multiple choice/matching...but Essays are on all exams. But, he will give you samples of what may be on the exam via a studyguide which is available well in advance.
