This class is pretty good, it;s not my favorite this semester but it's a class that you can get a passing grade in. you have to take a quiz after each chapter, but it is open notes. you have to read the whole chapter and take your own notes and he goes over the chapters pretty quick so that can get a little tiresome. this semester he is trying to put us in small groups to do worksheets and then explain it to eachother which i dont like at all because no one knows whats going on and i hate group work, but you get graded just for participation so its not too bad. overall i would say this is a pretty solid science class to take, esp compared to the others that WKU offers...

This is the most difficult class I have ever taken.
Dobler expects way to much out of a gen-ed course. We are supposed to listen to Radio Reports on Blackboard, watch Tegrity videos of further lecturing, take quizzes on Blackboard, map quizzes, and mroe.
Dobler tells you to spend atleast 6-8 hours outside of class preparing per week, which if you work and have other classes, is just ridiculous.
The tests are multiple choice and short answer. Just skimming the book will not help.
He is egotistical and unsympathetic. He doesn't answer emails.

Mr. Dobler is a really nice man, but his class is absolutely overkill for a gen ed geography class. Geography was my best subject in high school, and right now I'm not even sure if I'm passing his course. He's very strict and he gets really pissed off if you don't do everything exactly as he says. Like I said hes a nice man if you're just talking to him, but hes not the best teacher. He needs to stick to upper level geography classes.

If you are a type of person who likes challenges like I do, I strongly recommend you to take Scott Dobler! You are awesome Dobler!

Mr Dobler is a nice man OUTSIDE of class. He talks about some interesting topics in class as well. However, his class lectures a lot of times have nothing to do with the material in the chapter of the book you're on, and if it does and he's using powerpoint, he clicks through the slides too fast to take notes from them anyways. You HAVE to READ the chapters for the in class quizzes, and for the tests. You have to know the countries, major cities, and major geographical features of EACH area for each test. And you also have to know ALL the key terms for each test for each chapter. There is an in-class quiz for each chapter which is open NOTE but not open book (you can use the key terms printout from blackboard) and it is short answer. In class he tends to act like he knows everything, and you know nothing, and has made his students feel ignorant at times just when they simply ask a question. I would highly recommend against him if you are taking Geog 110, but if you DO end up taking him by no other choice, make sure you know ALL the info as outlined above. GOOD LUCK if you're in his class or going to be! Its definitely rough and it is a LOT of work!

Dobler is a really hard professor to crack but you have to play his game. Read the chapters and memorize the maps. If you score nearly perfect on all the map quizzes, they can outweigh poor test grades. Also, on his powerpoints he will post all the key terms and will have an icon next to the ones he will use on the next quiz. However, his tests are nearly impossible and I'm pretty sure he pulls most of his test questions from his mind which is filled with random info from current events and past geography books (geography books you don't have access to). If there is any website he suggests you use, then look at the quizzes on there. He will pull a few test questions from. Overall would I recommend this class, no. For a one-hundred level class it is way too much. For those who are already stuck in it though I hope this helps. Lastly, IF YOU HAVE AN A AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER YOU WON'T HAVE TO TAKE THE FINAL

After reading a few of the evaluations I definitely agree with anyone who says this guy is a horrible professor. First of all he acts like whatever he says is gold and whatever you say doesn't matter. For example, if you ask a question he doesn't even answer it, actually he usually completely dismisses it like you didn't even ask it and then he goes into a complete lecture over something that wasn't even mentioned. Do not expect to get the needed material in class because he doesn't give it to you at all, yes he does have powerpoints but he flies through them and will not give you the time to copy them. Also, you must must must have your book to even come close to passing because he will have you read it "cover to cover" (his exact words)! Also, as said in another evaluation he gives a TON of unnecessary work! For example, every week you must read the new york times and write a paper over the five themes of geography from that article. No that may not seem too bad but when you have quizzes to study for (that are every class period almost and are really hard to do good on) map quizzes to memorize and chapters to read it takes up a lot of your time. And another thing about the quizzes, they are open note, but its hard to go off your notes if you don't have any to go off of. I haven't finished the semester yet but I'm hoping I get a b or a high c out of this class and let me tell you that it is a huge struggle to get that. If you get an A in this class you must not have a life or you LOVEEE geography. I'm sorry this was so long but I just want everyone to know what they are getting themselves into if they choose this professor! Please do yourself the favor and take a different one.

First off I would just like to say that Scott Dobler is the WORST professor I've had so far at Western!! Not only does he give you the basic map quizzes and tests but he also piles on a lot of unnecessary work that has nothing to do with geography! He also gives quizzes almost every class period which are hard as hell...at least as hard as the tests are. Btw if you want to pass a test you better know every single detail of each chapter because if you don't be prepared to fail! Also, he doesn't talk about things that are in the book he just goes on rants for an hour about politics, and he continuously tries to make jokes that aren't funny at all they just make him look even more dumb than he already is! I could say more but I'm just going to sum it up as he is absolutely terrible and I HIGHLY recommend that no one take him!! you will seriously regret it!!

I had Dobler for aviation meterology (Geog 122), at first I did not care for his teaching style, and he came off as sort of a jerk, but as I got to know him and his style I learned more from him in a "aviation weather" class than I did in regular meterology classes. We only had 9 (yes NINE) people in our class, and it met one day a week but it was worth the thrusday night class, which he only kept us in there for an hour or so. Bottom line: if you want to be challenge and actually learn something that matters AND have fun at the same time, take him.

This teacher doesn't seem to understand that he is the one getting paid to teach the course, not the books (one of which was $120.25, and the other $12.75). The books required are horribly dry, and hard to follow. He asks you to read the book and then doesn't go over any of it in class, or he'll just barely mention it and then test you over it in greater detail. When he does give a lecture it's terrible, and he flies through it so fast that you don't have time to comprehend the material well enough to know if you need to ask question, much less be able to ask one. When you do manage to ask a question he doesn't really answer it. He seems to try to fly through answering your question as quick as possible; like it's a huge inconvenience for him. I am a junior, Sociology Major, currently with a good GPA (3.29) and took this course thinking it would be a nice way to end the day, but I was horribly mistaken. I rarely complain about my instructors, but this one was just too much. Please don't make the same mistake.

Expect to quit your job, and lose your friends when you sign up for this class. This class is so hard. Dobler doesn't make it any better. He teaches from 2 textbooks and expects you to know both, and bring them both with you to every class meeting. You have no class time to work on your labs. You are expected to spend about 15 hours a week outside of class on the labs (which take forever to do). There are a few quizes, which are open note quizes...they aren't too bad. You can go to his office for help, but be prepared to feel like crap(if you didn't before, he will make you feel like it when you leave).

Dobler makes this class nearly impossible. To prepare for the test he expects you to read the chapter 3 times, outline every last page (meaning re-write each chapter), put every definition on note cards, and do all of the questions in the back of the book. Keep in mind the chapters are around 20-30 pages long, and there is anywhere from 25-50 definitions. If you are taking any other class, and if you are involved in anything on campus, you WILL NOT have time for this class. Dobler has great intentions, but he has totally forgotten what it is like to be a college student, his class is not the only class we have to study for! I would recommend taking a different teacher.

Dobler seems like he would be a great teacher if he had any time for his students. He obviously is taking on WAY more than he can handle. He is very bad about getting back to students with questions and even worse at getting grades back to students. When he is constantly dumping insane amounts of work on the students and isn't available to help, the stress of this otherwise quite simple course becomes overwhelming. Please, consider taking a different professor's GIS class.

Long story short: read the book and memorize the map quizzes and you will score an A on every test. This class will put you to sleep, but it is an easy A if you just read the book. I swear that is all you have to do! It's really not worth listening in class because his lectures never have anything to do with his tests. It's best to read the book and take notes while he's giving his lecture; at least that way you'll be learning what matters.

Mr. Dobler is willing to help the students. The only reason I got a C is because I had been out of high-school for so long. A lot of things that he thought most students had learned in high-school, I had not. Other than that, it is pretty easy. Do read the chapters and come to class. Not much extra credit and the assignment are suppose to take a long time to do. If you don't like busy work, then don't take this course, unless you like this subject. Dobler is an okay teacher...you can tell that he really enjoys teaching. His tests aren't that bad, I just studied the night before and always made an A, usually 100 or 98%. The thing that killed me and made me get a B in the class was his stupid homework assignments. He treated us like we were in highschool...we had to color in maps and crap like that. It was easy, but took way too much time! With five other classes and a job to hold down, I never found the time to do it, and that's why I wound up with a B. Don't take the class if you hate busy work.

I was in the last 319 class, which is now 217 for anyone who will take this in the future. Either way, I assure you the similarities will be vast because Dobler has (had) to spearhead 217.
First of all, this class will be your introduction to GIS, so if you adapt well to the software then you'll do pretty well, but stick with it if you don't because it can be tough at first. Dobler was great at helping out and meeting with students if need be, and the only reason this class was merely ‘ok’ was because of its difficulty, whether it be the software or the tenously lengthy textbook, which I highly recommend you read (yes, it's boring).
Other then that though, the class is ok and Dobler tries to help at every twist and turn. Just remember, my class was the Guinea pig class so the challenges for both Dobler and us should be a lot more then the following classes. It can be done, and anyway I did get a B.
(Also, the essays are short essays, and attendance can be lax at times)

If you're looking for a 100-level course that's full of busywork and bad jokes, you'll love this class. Mr. Dobler has a teaching jones that he just can't shake. He loves this stuff, but a bit too much.
Attendance is mandatory. Miss six classes and you lose a letter grade. Miss seven and you fail. Notes are sparse, as he lectures from his PPT slides (which are actually interesting), diagrams, and video clips. He has a great sense of humor, and although most of his jokes were goofy, I liked them.
But that dedication and love for teaching is a bit misguided. There are 10 online quizzes worth 5 pts each, and 10 'activity' assignments worth 10 pts each. That doesn't sound bad, and in reality it's not, but you've always got something to do for that class. Quantity is being substituted for quality. No matter what you have to do on any given day, the odds are that you'll have to do *something for this class. The stuff isn't difficult, but it's just the fact that there is so much of it.
Mr. Dobler sticks to the 'learning pyramid.' OK, I actually understand it and realize its importance. I even appreciate that he has the foresight to use it. But it's as if he's got his quota for each part of the pyramid and has to conform to it. I'd prefer that he make the ideas and concepts more understandable and chuck the pyramid at times.
The tests can be hard. Again, it's sometimes hard to determine if he's thinking about the pyramid when creating a test or thinking about what he's taught and you've read. The tests DO require you to think, so I can't complain too much.
Make sure you buy the book. 95% of all test material comes from it. Make sure you turn off your cell phone in class, too, or else he'll answer it. Oh, he's available to help you if you need it, so don't hesitate.
I almost gave him a positive rating because he loves teaching more than most, likes to crack jokes, and is willing to help you if you ask him. Unfortunately, the amount of busywork is a bit too much, and he seems too preoccupied with incorporating various teaching techniques than he is the quality of his teaching (which isn't THAT bad). If you're a geography major, you should take him. If not, find someone else.

Alot of the stuff you learn you may think you will never use but its actually alot of stuff that I find myself using daily, sometimes even telling other people about. He has a passion for teaching which few teachers do and makes you eager to do your best. There isn't that much work and the activities that you will do take 10 minutes at the most, as do the discuss and review questions. As long as you attend class you could easily pass this class.

Professor Dobler loves teaching this class. He cares about all of his students and wants them to learn about the physical environment. However, this class is a little hard along with his teachings. He uses power point to get his points across, but if you read the book you will do fine. His test are multiple choice and the questions are tricky. He wants you to think about the concepts you learn and put them together with other concepts and how they relate. But if you read the book, study, take the online quizzes, do the activites and review questions you should do fine in this class. Dobler also will meet with you outside of class and help you with what you don't understand and how to study for his tests. Over all this was one of my favorite classes this semester and I really enjoyed taking it.

Taking Dobler for World Regional is like taking Dubya for public speaking, Ted Kennedy for drivers ed, or Clinton for a sexual harrasement seminar. The guy does not know what he is doing. He has read the book, and gives his own views and those of the textbook in class. This is not a guy who has traveled much, or has any real grasp of diversity.
We never really talked much about the world, mostly about internal American politics. He has a fetish for his '5 themes of geography', and has an ego the size of Australia, which we did not cover becuase he took so much time discussing Iraq. Honestly, the class is an insult to the intellegence of every student who takes it, and unless you are a self-hating sychophant, you will not enjoy it. Dobler remarked in class that people describe him as 'the devil'. That is not true, he is a nice guy, hower he really is a dunce.
He's probably a brilliant meterologist, however there is no reason why he should be teaching this course.

The people that are bitching are the people that want an easy class (easy A) that don't want to be intellectually challenged. My C shows you that I was challenged (more than I wanted sometimes) but he challenged the class to get off our ass and take control of our learning.

Get the books, because he will quiz you over the reading assignments. He makes you turn in everything prematurely and doesn't understand why nobody understands his "teachings." My recommendation, do not take him for anything. He is a very nice man, but his teaching and testing methods are all wrong. Mr. Dobler is a big-hearted man who enjoys helping others discover his love- geography. He gets down to business, but makes sure to joke around plenty. He has endless enthusiasm and energy, and cares more about how well you do than YOU do. He makes you want to do well. If your lucky, you'll get some of his life-insight.

Dobler is a great teacher, I don't know what the big deal is with people on this site. They act like he is satan in a professor's body. He is a really great teacher and a really great person as well. All he asks is that you learn a little bit about the world that we live in. Is that too much to ask? So you have to read a lot, get over it, you're in college. If you have to have this class, I recommend him, you will really learn a lot. If you are just taking it for gened, he's still a good teacher for that. Now I'm off my soapbox. I didn't take any notes at all while I was in class, all I did was do the required readings and studied for the tests with the book's web site (via flash cards, practice tests, and place location practice). You do this, and you're guaranteed at least a B, if not an A.

Being a major, I loved this class, although it was designed for non-majors. Dobler does grade the tests in a way that the non-majors do better than the majors (which doesn't seem quite right). But the class was relatively easy, and we had a chance to have fun, too.

Scott Dobler is by far the WORST professor at Western! He is nothing more than a sarcastic excuse for someone who claims to be "educated". Please save yourself the trouble and agony of ever being introduced to this man, and take anyone else you can think of for geography classes.

This class nearly killed me. If the 20-30 page research paper was not enough, we had readings that were highly difficult to understand and Dobler would give unannounced quizzes. He finally quit giving them, the grades were so bad. We had to write reviews on journal articles and the worst part was, he gave us articles to prepare presentations on, but numbers were drawn to see who would have to go! No one likes wasting their time on something. I did pull out a B somehow, but it was not easy. Dr. Groves also teaches this class, so take him if you have to have it!

i had to write a 30 page (minimum) paper for this class on an obscure subject that i had to pick, which sounds better than it is. be prepared to read every day because he loves pop quizzes, and does indeed have them. the paper was killer, but other than that, and some rather strange tests, i'm glad that i took the class with him because now any paper under 20 pages is a breeze. also, DO NOT have a cell phone on in his class. he WILL answer it.

This class was really cool. It is only worth one hour and is for 5 weeks. There is a midterm and a final, a group project, and small research paper. Our final project was making a volcano to blow up!! If you want something quick and easy, take this class or the others like it that are offered. Dobler was fun in this class, despite what you may have heard!

If you can avoid this class, then i would strongly suggest that. I never thought that it was possible for geography to be this hard, but i was wrong. He gives you tests on 3 chapters of material, which usuaully spans about 170 pages or so. Not only that, but you can be tested over the most insignificant part of all that.....which is the reason most everyone failed the tests. Also, be prepared to learn every country, capital, waterway, and physical feature in the world. I couldn't do it.....a 100 level course should not be this hard, but he managed to be convince himself that it should. if you are trying to maintain a decent grade point average, or trying to avoid going crazy...dont get dobler. or you may be taking it again the next semester to cover up a bad grade

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!! If you are even THINKING about this class- I have pity on your soul. Dobler is a horrible teacher with no skills whatsoever. He reads directly from the book, your so called "study guide" is a list of all the bold words from teh section, his map quizzes require you to know EVERY SINGLE FRIGGIN country, state, sity, landform, etc, and then when you think you know all of this becasue you have studied you butt off he'll test you on something small and irrelevant to the chapter(he'll pick one sentence out of 3 chpts and expect you to know it!) Over 2/3 of his class failed the last test, and he blamed on the students because HE IS NEVER WRONG in his little dramworld. Believe me I know! I WOULD HAVE RATHER THROWN MY SELF INFRONT OF AN ONCOMING M.A.C. TRUCK ON I-75 THAN TO TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!

Dobler is a good teacher and is pretty interesting. He just expects too much for a 100-level class. His tests are not just memorizing and regurgitating the material, he wants you to actually understand the concept behind the material. The only reason I'm doing good in his class is due to the fact that I'm a senior and have taken a lot of tests. So do not take this class if you're a freshman or sophomore.

A lot of people in our class didn't like Dobler, but I thought he was pretty cool. He teaches straight from the book, and lectures just about every class period, but he does make some good jokes and at least tries to make things like the cultures of Peru interesting. His tests are really tough, the best way to study is to read the chapters. He also gives map quizzes, which are sometimes pretty tough if you don't know the countries very well. Overall, I liked him and he was a challenge, but made geography pretty interesting.

DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY FOR ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!! He expects you to read way too much and doesn't lecture over anything relevant in class, so if you want to pass any of his test you have to memorize the most minute details of the reading. Not to mention that when he does talk about something in class half of the information you recieve is complety biased or incorrect. His test are next to impossible and after each one he goes over them in class and you feel like you are back in freshman seminar. He doens't anser any questions in class about the tests, any concerns you have you are expected to set up an appointment outside of class. Don't try and voice an opinion either, its always a "good perspective" but its the wrong one. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES.

Scott Dobler drives me nuts. He has a mandatory attendance policy and I feel like I don't learn anything while I'm in class. I started reading my book while he lectures so as to get something from the class period. I have a problem with professors that administer an examination in a 100 level class and then assume that all the bad grades were because no one knew how to study or did it the wrong way. Then spends a class period trying to justify why their test are awesome and why everyone who did poor doesn't know how to study. I would avoid this guy if at all possible. I dread going to this class every single day and learn more from reading a book. I would like to think that for the price of tuition I would take more from this class.

I liked Mr. Dobler as a person; however, as an instructor, well......... I have taken him before and aside from his horrible sense of humor he was a good teacher. I first had Dobler right after he came to WKU. Over the course of a few semesters he has become a lot harder. I recommended him to a few friends after taking a previous class with him. Problem with Dobler is he takes a very simple subject and turns into something much more complicated. HELLO - these are 100 level courses! I felt like he is trying to merge college geography class with a high school ethics class. Dobler was fun when he first started teaching here and taught his classes as if he enjoyed teaching them - not anymore. Notice his evaluations start out great back in 2000 and go down hill from then to the present. I have a 3.9 GPA and I am the type of person that can skip classes and do just as well studying on my own outside of class - by the way, someone who can do this drives him insane. You can tell Dobler is a bi-product of the military. Sometimes quite dry and rigid, he tells horrible jokes all the time and is very anal about his attendance policy - "by the book". If you a huge fan of communist dictators you will love this guy. He is the classic brain washed model of military influence. I would not recommend taking his classes – you must have a very compatible personality with him or he will drive you crazy.

He goes right along with the book. I just underline everything he is saying in my book and study that. It is a whole lot easier than taking notes.
