THIS IS THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!!!!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! He is a racist man!! I have always been a good writer, so much that I was encouraged to minor in it. When I had Mr. Epley, I would get D's on papers and he assumed that English was my second language. He based that on my name and color of my skin! I have no accent and I believe that my writing does not show that either. I ended up reporting him and withdrawing the class because of his ignorant comment. His tests are very specific and he assumes that everyone knows literature. Very rude man!!!! WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!

At the beginning of the semester, Mr. Epley hated me, so I didn't really start enjoying the class until after he got over the fact that I was late to a couple of classes and saw that I was a good writer. Honestly, he can be kind of a jerk unless he likes you. Overall, the class is ok. There's alot of writing, but it is a writing class so I guess that's inevitable. I would probably take someone else for English 300 though if I had to do it over...

I started Western with a 3.75 GPA and this teacher ruined it by giving me a C. He makes the course ten times more difficult than it actually is so you can not understand the material. And he states the first day that he does not give his favorites better grades, which is a lie because he most deffinitly does. If you do not like the class or literature you will not do well. Anything you turn in he rips apart while grading because nothing is good enough for him. You must attend classes and have your book. NO extra credit will be offered and it is a madatory cumulative final. The questions he puts on quizzes and test are rediculous. Be prepared to have to remember specific numbers and colors of clothing people wear in stories. I'm serious he asks the dumbest questions. You also have to remember certain lines from poems and be able to say what poem it came from. This course is impossible if he does not like you. I am just happy I came out with a C so I do not have to retake him. He will call you out in class and say you were talking about him when you definitly were not. Do not take him. Take someone that you will be able to at least enjoy the class a little. And if you have to take him do not let him know you do not like the material because that will do you in!

taking notes is up to you but it helps to write what he says. He is very helpful and nice, but he is stiff on his readings. The tests are difficult bc the questions are broad. you have to know details in stories that no one would understand unless he points it out. He does open your eyes and make you think "what if" when you read after taking that class.

The course consists of short stories (10 pgs long avg) and poetry. Mr. Epley knows his stuff, but he is so detailed in analyzing each poem or short story that it is hard to keep up. He moves quickly. his tests consist of terms (defining and giving specific details from story or poem), then the rest of the test is essay questions (you have to give extremely specific details!!!!) . 3 exams and a quiz almost every other day. listen closely and take diligent notes and you should be okay. He's pretty tough though.

Mr. Epley is the RUDEST teacher i have EVER had. I think that he should be turned in and fired. Not only is he rude but his teaching skills leave much to be desired. His test are based on different test you read in the class. The only problem is he doesn't really care about what the plot of the story is, his test questions focus on surface details such as what does the color of "this characters" shirt mean. Or, what were the numbers on the mailbox outside of the smith home.
If you have a good eye for detail and have a high tolerance for crap take this class....if not look for a better professor!

Mr. Epley seems like a really nice person but as a professor he oftens makes things more difficult than they have to be. You have to write 4 out of class essays but you are constantly writing in class. The final is another essay and you are required to write a 8 to 10 page research paper. He grades the essay pretty harshly. Just be willing to work hard for a good grade.

He's a pain..He's a talker, really over-zealous about literature and thinks everything "speaks to him". He quotes Designing Women during class and recommends tv shows, movies that are just random to what he's teaching. I dropped out before the semester ended. He gave a quiz over every reading, even if you read the questions were difficult and opinionated. I would avoid taking him, I new people in the class who stayed. They came out with Cs and Ds.

In Mr. Epley's class, we are given a story to read, and a quiz over it next class day. That's fine. What's not fine is the content of said quizzes. Instead of asking meaningful questions like "Why do you think Character X did this?" or "What elements helped add to the tension during chase scene?", he asks stupid, impossible questions like "What color are the main character's eyes?" and "What indicates that the main characters aren't 'bad'?" The last one wouldn't be so bad if the answer weren't "He read a book once." On the flip side, Mr. Epley himself is actually pretty interesting. Being a Bob Dylan fan will help score some brownie points.

Mr.Epley does indeed know a lot about his field of study. However, his method of teaching is a combination of "take no prisoners" and favoritism. This is especially true to special needs students (students with Autism) and will not let them pass the class no matter what.
He will give out daily quizzes about the assigned stories, but he would choose out the little details that would not matter to the plot of the story (which are about 10 pages long each). So unless you have a photographic memory I would suggest you choose another English 200 professor.

Mr. Epley is a nice person who tries to connect with you. However, he is probably the hardest teacher in the English department. I am in honors so I am up for a good challenge, however this 200 level class was far too difficult. My friend's with other teachers got seemingly-easy As while I had to work 5X as hard for a B. There are quizzes everyday over the reading, VERY specific question, like "What color were her shoes?" The final is almost impossible as it is over the 1000+ pages that we probably read in the class. If you are an English major take him because you WILL learn, however if you are a science major like me don't... Take one of the other teachers whom to him, "inflate grades!!!"

This is the hardest English class I have ever taken. You can only miss 3 days of class on MWF and 2 on TR for you not to lose any points or go down a letter grade for your final grade. I have always really enjoyed English, but Mr. Epley took the fun out of it. He expects every student to be an English major. The tests are divided into several different parts. One part is where you have difine literary terms, another part you answer questions about the stories/poems that you have read, and another part has quotes from the short stories that you read. To me this was the most difficult section. You must idenify the story, who is speaking to who, the author, and the significance of the quote. The tests are quite difficult, but if you like a challenge, go for Epley.

You wouldn't think that intro to literature would be a really hard class but it is when taught by this man. Mr. Epley is one of the most unnecessarily hard teachers I've ever had at Western. there is a lot to do in this class: daily quizzes; in class writing assignments; out of class writing assignments; tests; etc. etc. Not only do you pretty much never get a break, Mr. Epley grades really hard and expects his students to parrot back everything he says in order to get a A. He doesn't accept original ideas and seems to think that literature is completely objective and can only be analyzed/interpreted in one way, which is his way. A lot of the people I was in class with tried really hard to do well and many of them made D's or failed. On top of being a lousy teacher he's a real jerk. He seems to have a major chip on his shoulder about something. I don't know how people in his other classes felt but everyone in my class despised him. Avoid this teacher.

I HATED him at the beginning of the semester, but then I showed that I cared about my grade and didn't miss one class and I ended up really liking him. If you miss one class, you'll be lost the next class or you might have missed a 100 pt in class writing assignment. Just don't skip or you're screwed. He is an extremely smart person and can be quite witty sometimes, adding some humor to the class. Once again, DO NOT TAKE him if you expect an easy A or maybe even B...

I am a junior, and of all the teachers I have had, Epley is the absolute worst. Mr. Epley makes very immature and mean comments about students. His quizzes and tests are unnecessarily hard and unreasonable. He is extremely pretentious, pompous, catty (think twelve year old girl), unprofessional, annoying and resentful of his students. One time he humiliated a boy who was looking at his cell phone and he also accused a girl of having poor reading skills. He forces his opinions about the readings on people and refuses to aknowlege the student's ideas; he seems to think literature can only be interpreted in one way, his way. Avoid this malicious, hateful, miserable man at all costs.

Keith Epley is the worst teacher I have had while being a student at Western. Not only is he a really, really, really bad teacher, he expects you to have all kinds of background knowledge in literature. His lectures are boring, and you have write down every last thing he says, because his examples are the only ones you get full credit for on exams.
He expects students to memorize numerous definitions, and be able to provide direct quotes from the stories and poems that go with the definitions. He also has daily quizzes, and unless you read the story 4-5 times before the class you will fail.
Epley is a horrible teacher who expects too much from his students.

Mr. Epley gives you quizzes over the reading, which are very difficult to understand. the questions are very hard to understand and his in class writings are also hard to understand some times. He expects about 5 out of class essays, 3 or so inclass essays, a 10 page research paper, quizzes over readings, a midterm over all the readings and a final which I have not taken yet. If you want to work very hard then take this class..and even then, good luck getting a good grade. His midterm was so difficult that he had to add 10 points to everyone's tests.

If you are not naturally bent towards reading and writing or if you struggle with it, do not take this class, take Millichap. Mr. Epley is very nice if you are a good student and you respect him. However, he's a good english teacher who will challenge you in your writing. If you want to improve, take Epley. But be prepared to work. Lots of reading essays and in class essays and out of class essays analyzing what you read. It takes thought. There are essays at least every other day I would guess, or so it seems. Research paper, midterm, and a final. Other than that, a million essays and some quizzes over the reading. Prepare for a challenge if you register for this class - but Epley is a good teacher, and if you want to improve your writing and critical analysis, take him. He will have very differing views from many conservative people but he is quite unbiased and very respectful of other people's viewpoints.

This class has been my favorite at Western so far. Though it does help that I love to read and write, Epley makes you like this class with his detailed descriptions of the stories and poems you read and his great sense of humor. He is well-versed and knowledgeable of his subject, and he is very fair when grading essays and tests. I should've made an A in this class, but I tended to slack off on the essays. However, I bounced back and aced the last test and the final when I actually studied ALL the material. This class is enjoyable, fun, and taught by one of the best professors on this campus!

Epley is a wonderful teacher who has the unfortunate job of teaching a horrible class. This is the second time I've taken Lit, the first time, I got a D, so I thought I would retake it. Honestly, THERE IS NO GOOD WAY TO TAKE THIS CLASS, but, since you must, I suggest Epley. I really hated the material, I'm a sciences major, and I could give two shits about Hemmingway, Shakespeare, or any of those dead guys whose writings people analyze ad nauseum. Still Epley made the class fun. He's a great professor. HE GOT ME TO ACTUALLY READ THE LIT. There is a lot of work to do, more notes than in some of my 400 level math classes, and a lot of quizzes, but he gets you to pay attention, and to think. All you have to do to get a C: take good notes and read the material, B: take notes, read the material and act interested, A: take notes, read material, pay attention, and actively particpate in discussions. If you do that, I would highly suggest you take Epley, even though his classes work your ass off.

Professor Epley is a challenging Literature teacher. The one thing about his class is there are daily quizzes and weekly writing prompts. He demands a lot of work and if you want to really learn literature then he is the teacher to take. ü

Although many don't like Mr. Epley's class, I think he's an awesome teacher. Attendance is mandatory because the notes he gives in class will be used on the final as well as in essays. If you miss a class in which he discusses a story, then you come back on a day that he gives an in-class essay on that story, you're screwed. He makes class interesting because of his passion for literature. He gives quizzes almost every class, but if you read the assignment, it's not hard at all to make A's on them. He is one of the best teachers I've had this semester and I highly recommend this class.

I strongly recommend agianst taking this proffesor. He has a tendency to say the same things over and over, and he looks down on anyone that isn't as "good" and "smart" as he is. I thought he was an idiot!

Mr. Epley is passionate about his job, but he does look down on people who do not understand the difficult material that he assigns. There are multiple assignments of essays, which is not bad if you understand the prompts. If you are a simple writer, do not take his class because you will get a grade that is unexpected. He prefers expectional writers. If you enjoy pushing yourself, try his class.

Liking his course will depend soley on if you like him and his assesments of your learning. He is a difficult instructor and expects a lot from you. Personally, I enjoyed his lectures and they way he approaced them to the class. But, you will have to write a few papers and his exams are extremely overwhelming! Prepare to be mind-boggled by his passion for literature and make sure you get into the class discussion. I don't recommend that you miss this class, becuase you will be completely lost in that area. He requires a lot of thinking!

I had Epley for Eng 100, also. His 200 class is a little harder. You have lots of quizzes over daily reading assignments. They are easy if you read the assignments and pay attention to names and ages. He drops a few of your lowest grades. You must study for the exams. Know the definitions and be able to give examples of the definitions. I enjoyed the class; however, many other students told me they did not. If you generally like literature, you'll like Mr. Epley's course.

Not an easy A, but if you take notes over the class discussions, you will do fine. Gives quizzes almost every day to make sure you read the material--the quizzes are mostly over names, places, and dates, not comprehension or analysis.

Mr. Epley is way too into his literature. He never has any orginal ideas of his own, he is always quoting dead famous authors. You're lucky if you ever understand what he is talking about or any of his directions. I recommend another teacher unless you're looking for a hard teacher and a bad grade.

Mr. Epley teaches a 100 level course like it's a graduate course. The only reason I made an A in the course was because I took Honors Enligh and AP Literature and Composition all throughout high school. However, since he is harsh in his grading, it makes you a better writer. Don't take the class unless you're an English major.

You have no exams. You are graded on papers you write. Admittedly, Mr. Epley grades harshly, but at the end of the semester, two other professors look at your work and help to decide on a final grade. Mr. Epley is really funny. If you enjoy literature, you'll enjoy him. Mr. Epley will make you a better writer. I'm taking him for ENG-200 right now, so I'll let you know how that goes.

I feel that it is my duty to let everyone know that they should never take Mr. Epley as a teacher. He thinks he is funny, grades way too hard, and does not teach a thing. Stay clear of this class if at all possible. The class topics have been discussed so many times and it is so boring. Mr. Epley needs to remember that this is a English

Epley is passionate about his job, but tends to look down on you if you don't understand some of the extremely difficult stories he assigns. Lots of essays and writing. I made B's and C's on all papers, but the final was nearly impossible and i received a D in the class.
