The topic of this class is kind of interesting but you DEFINITELY have to study for this class. She posts a lot on Blackboard but even with studying, many people would fail her tests. I had to study a lot for the tests and did well, but you can also drop your worst quiz and not take the final if you like the grade that you have. Overall, she's not a good professor and you really have to want to do well on your own. She always always always calls on people to answer questions in class as well. HATED it.

Dr. Wilder is a great professor. She is approachable and fair in the classroom. It is important to go to class because attendance counts off. But, everything you need is on Blackboard -- the notes, the powerpoints, the reviews. Otherwise, if you do the assignments and keep up with the class, an A is very easy to obtain.

Professor Wilder should only teach to juniors in seniors in my opinion. Her class is suppose to be a 100 level and a general ed but she doesn't treat it as so, it can be pretty difficult to understand and she doesn't appreciate many questions- if you don't don't ask just drop out and do somewhere else she doesn't have time for you...her graduate assistant at the time usually took pity on us when I took her class.

The olny thing that made this class hard was the face that Dr. Wilder could NOT teach!!!! she had to be one of the worst teacher i have ever had in my life! the only way i passed this class was by me teaching myself and by me going to the tutoring center to learn the chapters. you have either a test or quiz every week. The home work assignments are extremely easy but they are only worth 5 points. you must pass the test to pass the class. Also the only way you would be able to pass is if you read the chapters and learn by yourself. Mrs. Wilder has no sympathy and she can not teach worth anything
DO NOT TAKE HER!!!! you will regret every decision of it!

Dr. Wilder was one of the worst teachers i've ever had. I thought psychology was going to be an easy A and it wasn't at all. I am retaking psychology next semester to get a better grade because she didn't know how to teach at all. She would give examples on sitatuions and you would have no idea what she was relating it too. Her tests are so hard and she doesn't cover half the stuff on the test in class. DO NOT TAKE HER

She makes the class harder than in needs to be. She takes attendance but it doesn't count towards anything and all the notes are on blackboard so it's easy not to go to class. Her lectures are very boring and she likes to call people out during class. Tests are fairly simple if you attend class and read read read the chapters but if you don't then you will not do well on the tests. Definitely take advantage of the extra credit.

Joyce is a good professor and the class is very easy. If you go to class, take notes, and read the chapters, you'll do great on her tests. They are all multiple choice, never any essays. If you're happy with your grade at the end of the class, you don't have to take the final. If you want an easy A, take this class.

I took this class during the summer with Joyce Wilder. At first she seemed like a really nice teacher to me, but as the class continued she seemed to really get on my nerves. Learning sign is something very difficult to do if you have never had any experience before or don't plan on practicing to make yourself better. IF you are interested in sign and would like to learn it then there is no reason you could not handle this class. It does get very difficult at times and sometimes the exams are not fair at all, but just do the best you can. We did have to do contact hours with the deaf which I had a blast with. I met some really interesting people that I still keep in contact with. I plan on taking ASL 2 in the fall so it should be interesting!!

This is the worst teacher, ever- hands down. I cannot stand her, she is awful. Examples include all (but are not limited to) the following: unorganization at ALL times, rude as hells yet she seemingly hides it so she can somehow get away with it, being the biotchiest teacher I have ever had, assigning the DUMBEST and most POINTLESS papers, being the WORST dressed teacher (ever)..even worse than the bio department.., and having NO justifiable grading system WHATSOEVER. if you decide to take her for any class, beware! i looooved her in ASL 1 and wish i would have never taken ASL 2.

After the first day, there is no talking unless she gives you permission beforehand. She loves people that volunteer to go first, so make sure you do so. If you don't volunteer then she will randomly pick someone, and most likely, it will be the dumbest one in the class. She is a really good professor that wants to help everyone learn ASL. Her parents were deaf and she is an interpreter at a local church. There will be mandatory contact hours that you must complete in order to get your final grade. Our class only did 6, but that's because we now have a new ASL lab and an annotated bibliography. She takes a really long time grading things so don't expect to find out your grade before the drop date. If you take this class, be prepared to make some really good friends in your class and meet a lot of deaf people in the community. There is now a minor that will start in the fall of 2006, so if you take ASL 2, you will be able to go on and take ASL 3 and ASL 4. It's exciting.. take this course and be prepared to have fun and work hard!

Her notes have nothing to do with the tests becasue I memorized like all her notes and when you read most of the reading have nothing to do with the test. You have to teach your self the material. I know I am not paying money to teach my self everything. For the first month or so it took her atleast 30 mins to take attendence which was a waste of time. She rambles on about absolutly nothing. I would AVOID her unless your really good at teaching your self or had already taken a psy coarse before. but it is not easy so you might want to look for another teacher.

This woman thinks you have nothing else to do but sign... Never mind classes, job or anything. Yes, it is true this woman is senile. It does help to have the deaf person from the community helping the class!!! Make sure you have nothing to do in that semester!!! She wants you to believe that she is making you aware of this community. Instead she makes you run from this community. The first assignment is about how much deaf people hate hearing people. WHAT? I found that the deaf community was more than patient with you. I enjoyed the idea of the class, but I hated this class!!

Dr. Wilder is a really great teacher. She is very interactive with students and always willing to help. She takes the material and puts it in a form you can understand and apply to your own life. She heads up study sessions whenever it is most convenient for the students, and does a good job at explaining any questions you have. Her tests are pretty fair. They do require a little studying. But I liked most of the material we discussed so therefore studying was easier. Her final exam is optional. Basically she takes your 4 best exam scores out of 5 (counting the final) and averages them for your grade. So if you are satisfied with your grade before the final, you don't have to show up. I had a 88% and thought about not taking it. But I did and ended up doing better on the final than my lowest test grade, so she dropped my other test grade and used my exam....resulting in my A. So take the exam, it can help you!!!

Dr. Wilder, though intimidating, is a relatively nice woman. She knows what she is talking about, and when she's talking it, you'd better not interrupt!
There is a quiz and test for every chapter (but sometimes the chapters are grouped).
The final is waived, if your attendance is good, and you miss no quizzes.
Extra credit is available. You can attend several campus lectures, and write evaluations on them, or do the extra credit assignments posted on Blackboard.
She also holds study sessions for the tests.
We watched several videos, had numerous demonstrations, and a couple of experiments and class speakers.
All-in-all, I found her class, though challenging, a very enjoyable, and intellectually inspiring one.

Dr. Wilder is a great teacher. You don't talk in class, and you really need to be able to learn visually. She won't stop for you to write down how to sign something. You need to have enough time in your schedule to have time to practice and also for "contact hours". To complete the class, you have to have 10 contact hours (outside of class); 5 hours with a group of people along with people from the deaf community; and 5 hours with individual deaf people (about 2-3 people). You also will need to write article summaries about every other week or so...The test--well again you need to be able to remember and if you aren't committed to this language, I'd advise taking something else...P.S. There is no talking after the 1st class!!

ASL 1 is not any easy course unless you are dedicated to the language. She requires at least 10 hrs of interaction with the deaf community, and if you don't start them at the beginning of the semester, you could end up receiving an incomplete and having to finish credit up over the break. Tests are VERY hard and include watching her sign and translating, signing your own story, and mulitple choice questions about the Deaf culture. She grades rather hard and you'll have an article to read every week, but it is an enjoyable class and you actually learn a lot. A warning though- there is no talking within the class; only signing.

Her test suck because she adds information that she doesn't discuss in class and I could never find the answers in the chapters so I'm not sure where she comes up with some of her questions. Most people thought Wilder was the greatest teacher in the world when I took her. Frankly she was a nightmare. She told me she would help but said there was no reason I should be frustrated about the language. I was told a lot about the "Deaf Culture." Upon telling her that it seemed like the people wanted their own country she got mad.
She did not see anyone else's point of view. She humiliated anyone who had problems. If you had a penis you did well or were extremely pretty she doted on you. If you were plain and just struggling she lost interest.
She gave out assignments that were often pointless and were involved in even further making one think that biggots were about. 15-30 hours of interaction with the "Deaf Culture" was required. This was often humiliating and required one to forget who they were and loose all their self-esteem.
Needless to say this was a pointless class for me to take and I wish I had not. I lost most respect I have for the "Language." I soon realized why it was not tought. Warning if you are going to take ASL it is not a language spoken out of the U.S. it will be pointless for places like Spain, Italy, Japan, India or anyplace that would require a second language.

This professor does not know how to teach. She rambles on about certain examples that have nothing to do with the class and then gives a quiz each week over minor details in the textbook. She also likes to single out certain people in the 200+ class and humiliate them by making them act out examples from the book for a dollar bill. She also will give extra credit, but then take it away from you and act like she forgot all about it. I'm serious. AVOID WILDER FOR ANY PSY CLASS.

Dr. Wilder is the worst teacher I have ever had. I have never had any problems with psychology classes before, normally making all A's and B's in them, and this class as you can see, I flunked. She is completely disorganized, and gives no help with anything. If you ask her a question don't expect her to answer it but just turn around and ask another student to answer it for you. And the tests might be over material she disscussed, but don't count on it. She also makes it mandatory for you to attend, but often she didn't even come to class on her own, and she gave us no notice that she wasn't going to be there. So, I strongly advise taking another teacher if it is at all possible.

Large class but lots of discussion and in class demonstration and class participation (but not graded on it). If you read the chapter and go to class, you should make an A. Quizzes about every 2-3 class periods and both quizzes and tests are scantron multiple choice with a couple true false questions. There are some application questions, but if you listen in class you should do fine!

I totally loved this class. I would recommend this class to anyone but be prepared to attend class b/c if you don't you will be lost. Dr. Wilder is super nice but expects you to take this class seriously. I would advise you to take it during the summer b/c you become immersed in the language and it is easier to grasp that way. Hours are required for this class. You must spend time with the deaf community....it takes time but it is fun all the same.

Dr Wilder was a great teacher but her tests were impossible. I had a lot of trouble with them. You have to know the book and the notes really well. So for me it was difficult for others not so much. So if you put your best foot foreward and really try its workable. Its a 400 level class theres no breezing through any of those. God bless

I really loved this class. It was the best "foreign" language that I could have taken. I don't think that I would have been able to speak another language(such as spanish or french) after just one semester, but I know that I can communicate effectively with the deaf community. This class does require alot of time outside of class, but no more than one would normally use as study time. It is really worth it. I think everyone should take this class.

She is a wonderful professor. A lot of people in my class though she was a little strange but I really liked her class. She offers extra credit questions on every test. You are allowed to miss one quiz and not have to make it up. If you show up for every test you don't have to take the final as long as you are satisfied with your grade.

Dr. Wilder is horrible. All she does is get up in front of class and babble about stuff you'll never see on a test. The class is so boring and you have to go. The class isn't hard though. AS long as you have time to read the book, otherwise you won't do so well. The test comes almost entirely from a bunch of long boring chapters in the book. The class sucks and you won't learn anything, but if you can read you'll get an A on the tests. It's pretty easy. And if you're happy with your grade at the end you don't have to take the final.

Dr. Wilder is an excellent teacher and I highly recommend her. If you go to each class and listen then the tests will not be very hard. She puts study guides online so you don't even really have to take notes. This is an easy class but you will learn a lot too!

Dr. Wilder is a nice woman, but extremely disorganized and slightly condescending to students. She isn't very helpful and doesn't teach this course very well. However, she offers plenty of extra credit to allow you to make an A if you take advantage of it all. This class is a lot of work, but you can make a good grade if you are willing to do the work.

Overall, I would have to say, if you can get another instructor for this course, please do. As a person, Mrs. Wilder was nice, as an instructor, not clear on what she wants you to learn for exam. Lots of notes, and this does not mean that the test will consist of your notes or what she discussed in class. Who knows?

Dr.Wilder is a strange lady, however, her class was EASY! I didn't study too much and I got A's and B's on the tests and quizzes. Extra Credit options were available quite often. Depending on your grade you may not have to take the final even. Her Student teacher held study essions and that was helpful too. Class was full of insightful, yet weird, discussions with class assignments that were interesting many times. It was a good class!

This class was fairly easy because of the amount of extra credit available. Dr. Wilder is a very nice lady, but she tends to jump from subject to subject. Reading the text is necessary because of this. She does exempt from the final if you have an A on every test.

This is an intense class. The majority of it is silent--be prepared to have some moments of frustration. The best way to describe the test questions is sort of essay format. The tests are ddivided into two parts. In the first one you will be tested over material from the text. The second half is more difficult. You watch a video of people signing and you type what you see. You will see the video three times, but they sign much faster than you will be used to from class. There are also required hours to be spent with the deaf. These aren't just fun (which they can be), but they can also really help you in practicing. Well worth the time and the effort.

SUCKS....BAD! This class killed my G.P.A. I slaved and never missed a class. The material was hardly reflected on the tests administered. This class must strictly be for the psychic who can read her mind...because the text and her lectures will do you no good. Prepare to die!

The professor seemed unconcerned with her students and how they were doing in the class. Although she would meet with you, she often would not offer any guidance as far as tests or papers. Her grading methods left a lot to be desired. Even for a writing component class, there was an extremely large amount of writing assignments. Extra Credit assignments were not fully explained. She continually changed criteria as to the activities we could do.

Lectures did not pertain to anything on the tests. Extra Credit was given, but no explanation for how it would be added to your grade.
